Synology introduces new, faster SOHO NAS w/ hot-swappable drives for $330

Synology has quietly pushed out the new DiskStation DS214 as their latest offering for SOHO and small businesses. It features dual-core processing capabilities, increased read/write speeds of over 100 MB/s, and new tool-less bays for easier drive installation.

This new NAS will also run DSM 4.3, which includes a revamped Cloud Station, Photo Station, Video Station web apps and complementary iOS apps. We have reviewed several of Synology’s offerings in the past and have always been impressed with their flexibility and breadth of rich-features. The DS214 is now shipping over seas and will be available in the US within the next few weeks for $329.99. Full press release can be found below the fold.

To laminate how great of a value the new DS214 is we are going to take a look at a current ‘deal’ being floated for the previous generation DS213+. We must advise that it is a smarter move to hold off for a few weeks and pick up the DS214 as the two models are nearly identical. Both NAS systems include a dual-core processor, 512 MB of system memory, 2 drive bays, 1x USB 2.0 / 2x USB 3.0 ports, 1x Gigabit ethernet, and 2 year warranties. There are only two advantages to the DS213+. First, the processor is clocked a negligible .01 GHz faster and second it includes an eSata port. We believe that a current generation system with hot-swappable drives for $10 less is a much more attractive purchase.

Synology® Unveils the Versatile New DiskStation DS214 for SOHO and Small Business

BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Synology America Corp. launches the DS214, their latest feature-rich 2-bay NAS server for SOHO, and small businesses. As an upgrade to last year’s popular DS213, the DS214 delivers an optimal price/performance solution to securely share data in a variety of productive environments

The DS214 runs Synology’s award-winning DiskStation Manager 4.3 (DSM 4.3). The latest version of DSM includes several features that make the DS214 a versatile tool for a variety of scenarios.

DSM 4.3 includes utilities like:

  • Cloud Station with selective sync – keep files, file types, and folders up to date on all devices
  • File Station folder link sharing – easily share content without having to set user permissions
  • Android, iOS, and now Windows Phone support – for convenient remote access

The DS214 improves on the DS213 by transitioning from single core, to dual core processing – with integrated floating-point unit (FPU). The added performance boost brings with it read/write speeds of over 100 MB/s, and the FPU dramatically increases the speed of thumbnail generation. Additionally, Synology has included its new tool-less drive bays, for easier drive instillation.

Designed to be cool, quiet, and energy efficient, the DS214 is significantly more cost effective and easy to manage than comparable PC equivalents. “The DS214 is every bit an evolution of the DS213,” said Thadd Weil, public relations manager of Synology America. “Synology continues to make its robust line of SOHO and small business devices even better.”
