Cut the cord in style by adding a TiVO Roamio OTA DVR to your setup for a one-time $300 fee

TiVo may not be as popular as it once was during the early part of this century, but the company’s gear is still one of the best ways to watch TV. Late last summer TiVo put out its Roamio OTA DVR system and since then reviewers continually called it the best over-the-air DVR system for cord cutters. However, most of the time that sentiment was followed by harsh criticism of TiVo’s monthly fees.

But now that barrier has been demolished with TiVo’s new pricing structure…

TiVo normally charges $49.99 for the Roamio OTA DVR box plus an additional $14.99 per month to keep it running. Now you can pay $300 up-front for the box and never have to pay another dime for TiVo service. So you’ll be forking over an additional $250 for the actual unit but you should recoup that in about 17 months by not having to pay the recurring $15 fee. A couple things to keep in mind: we’ve only found this new plan available from TiVo.com and we’re hearing that it’s likely limited time pricing

This particular TiVo is designed to work with over-the-air HDTV antennas (Mohu/AmazonBasics are best bets).

It’ll record up to four shows at once and can store up to 75 hours of HD programming on its 500GB hard drive. It also features TiVo’s popular guide and suggestion interfaces, with unified search across TV and streaming apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. You can even access TiVO from your iPhone or iPad with its iOS apps, but you’ll need the Stream box to actually watch TV and movies on your mobile devices. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t support cable cards.

With a slick user interface and no monthly fees, the TiVO Roamio should be the centerpiece of any cord cutters setup.
