This clothes-folding washing machine brings first-world laziness to defcon zero

Say what you want, doing laundry isn’t easy. Nor is often fun. We’ve come so far, I don’t even have to get off the couch to unlock my front door anymore. Laundry machines haven’t seen as much advancement. There are some pretty cool washer and dryer options these days, but there is still some labor involved in the process.

Thankfully, Panasonic has partnered with Seven Dreamers in Japan to develop a unique laundry solution, called Laundroid, that takes most of the work out of cleaning your clothes. The good news: it folds your clothes by itself. The bad? It takes up to seven hours to complete a load…

Laundroid is an all-in-one washer and dryer combination that is capable of neatly folding your clothes. The whole system is ensconced by a wall length unit that houses the washing machine, drying system and folding apparatus.

One of the coolest features of Laundroid is its ability to identify specific pieces of clothing and fold them accordingly. That means your pants will get a different treatment than shirts, and so on. Laundroid recently had its first showing in Tokyo, offering a slight glimpse into the future of your laundry experience. According to reports, it really was just a glimpse. The spokeswoman simply put an already cleaned shirt into Laundroid and fives minutes later it came out folded. Forty clothing items are said to take anywhere from three to seven hours to complete.

Obviously, there could have been some tomfoolery here but all accounts point to Laundroid being on track to be released to the public. Just don’t count on ordering one of these any time soon. The current product plan stretches all the way to 2020. There will be an initial offering in 2016 to gauge interest, followed by a beta testing period and then products will begin to ship in 2018 or later.

Pricing has yet to be revealed but we’d guess that this type of technology won’t come cheap. Maybe by 2019 we’ll be ready for something like this, but for now you’ll just have to stick to one of the MiracleFolder.
