Olympus wants you to beat the hell out of its new Tough TG-Tracker 4K Action Camera

We’ve moved passed the days when GoPro was the only name in action camera equipment. Now, the market is littered with cost-effective and high-end options. Extreme athletes and YouTube stars are looking for other ways to capture their adventures. Manufacturers have taken note and are now churning out new products that are designed to take a beating. Olympus is the latest with its Stylus Tough TG-Tracker Action Camera that has every bell and whistle you might imagine. More below.

The focus here is an ultra-tough design that can withstand a pounding from just about any activity. Olympus uses a unique design with a pistol grip mount that was created for extreme sports like diving, skiing and the like. The lens itself is mounted on the side next to a light that is capable of putting out 60 lumens for one minute or 30 lumens for up to 30 minutes. It also has a smaller 1.5-inch LCD display for managing settings and checking shots.

Of course, Olympus knows that it needs to bring the tech as well. The TG-Tracker can record 4K video at 30fps or 720p at 120fps. A built-in 8MP sensor is a little bit disappointing but the long-term play here is for video anyways. A 14mm/F2.0 lens has a wide angle design that will capture a 204-degree field of view. GoPro’s HERO4 Black tops out at 170, for comparison.

Aside from the rough-and-tumble design, another area of strength for the TG is its bevy of sensors. We’ve come to expect GPS but Olympus takes it a step further with a compass, barometer, accelerometer and temperature gauge all wrapped in a waterproof case. You’ll be able to take this camera down to 100-feet without issue while still using the camera and all of the optics, without fault, according to the manufacturer.

We’ll continue to wait on GoPro’s next HERO action camera, which is due out later this year. In the meantime, pressure is building as stiff competition is coming from all angles. The Olympus TG-Tracker is slated to ship next month and is currently available direct from the manufacturer for $349.99 shipped.
