Synology unleashes its most affordable 2-bay NAS ever, the DS214se for $160

Synology has announced two new entries in its line of Network Attached Storage systems for small businesses and home office environments. The all-new DS214se is Synology’s most affordable solution coming in at a MSRP of just $159.99, which is even less than some of the company’s 1-bay options. The ‘se’ in the product name stands for single-role edition meaning it’s engineered to efficiently run through one major task at a time.

The DS214se makes the most of what a NAS is built for: remote access, file sharing, backup, and media streaming.

It’s completely compatible with Synology’s much-loved DiskStation Manager 4.3 NAS operating system, which supports a breadth of features presented in an easy-to-use interface:

  • File Station with folder link sharing – easily share data without having to set up custom permissions
  • Cloud Station with selective sync – Keep files, file-types, and folders in sync across all of your devices
  • Scheduled Backup – Keep local data safe from accidents
  • iOS, Android, and Windows Phone support – for convenient remote access

“The DS214se is an ideal solution for users who want backup, remote access, and the benefit of Synology’s DSM with its rich ecosystem” said Thadd Weil, public relations manager at Synology America Corp. “It’s an advanced storage utility, that brings the private cloud down to our most affordable level ever.”

The DS214se is now shipping globally and will be available in the United State within the next few weeks. Amazon is now taking pre-orders.

Synology also released the DS214+, which can now reach read/write speeds over 200MB/s and 150MB/s thanks to enabling link aggregation as part of its dual-NIC design. It features hot-swappable bays making it easier than ever to install/replace drives. The DS214+ brings unparalleled performance at an attractive price point for small businesses. This new NAS is now shipping globally. US availability will be added in the next few weeks.

Neither solution comes with drives. We recommend picking up the Western Digital Red NAS-optimized drives with IntelliPower to achieve optimal performance and rock-solid stability from your Synology system.
