LEGO is the most valuable toy company in the world, besting the likes of Mattel and Hasbro. So it’s no surprise that the company wants to get in on one of the hottest trends in the toy industry: NFC video game figures like Activision Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Nintendo amiibo figures.
Today the brick maker announced Dimensions, an upcoming video game that works in conjunction with a slew of NFC Minifigures. The in-game characters are pulled from a diverse set of franchises including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago, Back to the Future…
All of the characters, levels, and objects will be fair game, which LEGO thinks will make for some wild scenes that only this game could produce:
Now for the first time in a video game, LEGO fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world – combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the LEGO DeLorean Time Machine in New Ninjago City – the creative play is endless.
This is just the beginning. LEGO plans to release additional Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs to keep the gameplay fresh.
The $100 Starter Kit includes a copy of the game on PS4, PS3, Xbox 360. Xbox One or Wii U, the LEGO Toy Pad (NFC portal), LEGO bricks to built the Gateway, and three Minifigures (LEGO Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldsyle).
