Apogee’s new aluminum USB headphone amp and portable DAC is now available

Back in January Apogee unveiled its portable Groove USB headphone amp and DAC, and today the company is announcing its worldwide availability. Apogee has long since been known as a recording industry leader in digital-to-analog audio gear, and you’re going to be paying for it with Groove.

You’re getting a quad sum DAC (4 DACs per channel) that can reproduce high fidelity 24 bit audio at 192kHz and an interesting feature known as “Constant Current Drive”. This allows Groove to adapt to your particular set of headphones, adjusting the output wattage specifically for your set-up.

The USB connected DAC/amp is built from “premium” aluminum and will set you back $295. While certainly a steep price considering some headphones aren’t even that much, it will be interesting to see what a company like Apogee can do with a great pair of cans and some high quality FLAC/AIFFs or streaming from something like Tidal. We are starting to see the Groove pop up at retailers like Amazon and B&H, as well as on Apogee’s web store and at brick and mortar locations.
