Amazon now ships some smaller items for free even if you don’t have a Prime membership

Amazon has found a new way to make sure every single item you ever buy comes from its online marketplace. In a message posted on Seller Central, Amazon outlines its new initiative called “Fulfillment by Amazon Small and Light” that offers free shipping on thousands of smaller items without requiring a Prime membership or minimum order threshold.

This new service is only applicable to select items offered by third party sellers that are priced under $10 and weigh 8 ounces or less. Individual sellers must opt-in to this new program and just like with other products fulfilled by Amazon, all shipping and returns will be handled by Amazon itself.

All Small and Light orders will dispatch from Amazon’s new warehouse in Kentucky and as such will take approximately 4 to 8 business days to reach your doorstep.

Amazon spokesman Tom Cook via USA Today:

“The new program provides a cost effective way for sellers to offer low-cost items and for customers to get free shipping. It’s a win-win for customers and sellers – the new program costs sellers less to ship an item than it would if they were to do it through their own fulfillment network…”

We haven’t yet tracked down any items that qualify for this new shipping option, but it supposedly includes stickers, iPhone accessories, makeup, and other tiny goods.

Last week Amazon announced free same day delivery for Prime members in select markets and just last month Amazons teamed up with JetBlue to offer in-flight entertainment.
