New Games/Apps: popular puzzler Threes! goes free-to-play the right way & Drop the Chicken 2 releases at 50% off

Developer Asher Vollmer has now brought his Apple Game of the Year winning puzzler, Threes!, to the free-to-play space. After being heavily ripped off and cloned by other free iOS games, Vollmer decided it was time to start playing hardball, but in the right way. This isn’t your typical free-to-play mobile app that is littered with ads and IAPs, in fact, there are no in-app purchases or annoying pop-ups while you’re playing the game at all:

The regular $2.99 version of Threes! is still available, but now you can opt in for the new Threes! Free for iOS and Android. After nearly a year of development, Vollmer has implemented an ad feature that he feels doesn’t ruin the gameplay experience in any way. You have a certain number of “plays”, once they run out you can jump into a menu to watch an ad or two for more. Otherwise, you can just buy the full paid version and bypass the ads entirely. You can see how it works above.

Next up, the quirky Drop the Chicken got a sequel this week. Drop the Chicken 2 is now available on the App Store for an introductory price of $1 (Reg. $2), and introduces a “host of awesome new tools and animated circus characters in your effort to solve the levels and save Chuck and his girlfriend!”

Following along the lines of the original’s puzzle gameplay mechanics, Drop the Chicken 2 has 100 puzzles spread across 5 stages, bonus levels, Game Center/achievement support and, just like Threes!, absolutely no IAPs or ads.

Your mission is to cunningly plan Chucks journey to the dive pool while catching all the bugs along the way. Drag the acrobatic tools into place, swipe the switch and watch Chuck bounce off elephants, shoot out of cannons, do a trapeze act with monkey’s and fly around the levels like a master acrobat…It’s not going to be easy! This is one of the most challenging and hilarious puzzle games on the app store. There is no time limit, just awesome puzzles and weeks of entertainment!
