Cusby adapters work like LEGO to let you build a custom USB-C hub

Cusby, a new crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, wants to make your new 12-inch MacBook more versatile. This modular system lets you chain a variety of USB-C adapters together to create a customized hub:

Currently Cusby offers power charger, USB-A, and HDMI adapters, but has plans to develop others including Thunderbolt, Display Port and Ethernet. Each adapter has a male USB-C connector on one side and a female USB-C port on the other. That allows you to create a truly custom hub and still always have an open USB-C port. You have the choice of either plugging Cusby directly into your laptop or using a USB-C extension cable.

Cusby is obviously being marketed towards MacBook owners, but it’ll work with any USB-C equipped laptop including Google’s latest Chromebook Pixel. It’s a creative way to add more connectivity options to the new MacBook, but I’m not sure Apple fans are going to be OK with the big ‘Cusby’ logo slapped on the top of each adapter. A Cusby Starter Pack includes one adapter and a USB-C extension cable for $39.

CUSBY UNLOCKS THE USB-C PORT OFFERING AN EXPANDABLE SOLUTION FOR THE LATEST MACBOOK

Now Available for Pre-Order on Indiegogo, Modular “Building Blocks” Break Free Single Port Limitations

MIAMI – July 21, 2015 – Gone are the days owners of the newest MacBook edition have to choose which device they want to connect to using the USB-C thanks to Cusby (http://www.cusby.com/), which today introduced its line of modular and expandable solutions to break free single port limitations. The Cusby “building blocks” are now available for pre-order starting at $25 on Indiegogo (http://igg.me/at/cusby) with delivery expected in October 2015.

“The USB-C is a game-changer offering a truly powerful standard protocol for high speed data transfer and power charging, but on the newest MacBook, the single port overshadows its greatness, instead highlighting the inconvenience having just one port actually is,” said Albert Garvett, Co-Founder and CEO, Cusby. “With most consumers often needing to charge and connect to a device simultaneously, we spent countless hours developing a solution that would fit every consumer’s needs in a solution that is portable and affordable.”

Rather than rely on a bulky USB hub or docking station, Cusby is modular, meaning you don’t have to commit to a set of ports that you may or may not use. Instead, just plug in the appropriate Cusby that serves your current needs. The more devices you need connected, the more building blocks you can add, while always keeping a USB-C port open, because for every Cusby connected, a new USB-C port is created. At launch, Cusby will be offering the following three models:

  • USB-C Power Port – Offers a USB-C port to connect a power adapter to charge the MacBook
  • USB-A Data Port – Will connect any standard device like a smartphone, tablet, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
  • HDMI Video/Audio Port – Connect to an external display, TV set or receiver to transfer HD-quality video and audio to any compatible device.
