Logitech’s new Harmony Home Hub Extender lets the pizza man in with your remote

Following the release of its new Harmony Elite universal remote, Logitech is back today with a fresh add-on for your home theater setup. The new Harmony Home Hub Extender brings compatibility for Zigbee and Z-Wave products. This move further puts Logitech out in front of the competition when it comes to smart home control.

While Apple continues to develop its HomeKit platform, Logitech has slowly collected support from some of the biggest names in the smart home world. After all, what’s better than unlocking the front door with your remote?

The Harmony Home Hub Extender attaches to your existing smart hub to add support for Zigbee and Z-Wave. This includes big-name products from Cree, GE, Kwikset, Schlage and many others. Logitech’s new Harmony Elite remote already had support for popular products like Philips Hue, August smart locks and the Nest thermostat.

Today’s news allows users to further the “wake-up” experience of pressing a single button to turn on all your smart home devices. Additionally, this lets other sensors in your home “talk” to Logitech’s hub. For example, unlocking your door can now turn on your home theater or start playing music through a SONOS speaker system.

As more companies produce or partner with Internet of Things products, we expect to see additional joint ventures like this. It’s yet to be seen how useful it will be to control some of these products from your remote but the option to do so is nice. The Logitech Harmony Home Hub Extender is available for purchase today for $99.99.
