Waylens is the iOS-connected dashboard camera you’ve been waiting for

Action cameras have taken over the world of consumer technology. From GoPro to Monoprice, it seems like the options are endless. Capturing your automotive excursions has proven to be more complex and less straightforward. Online retailers are littered with cheap options that don’t seem to offer much in the way of quality.

A fresh Kickstarter project, called Waylens, is looking to change all that. After raising nearly five-times its initial goal in a short period of time, it’s save to say consumers are ready for that change too.

Waylens is centered around a compact camera that attaches to your windshield. This acts not only as a means for capturing video but also a hub of data collection. An OBD-II connector (like Automatic) and steering wheel remote system communicate with the camera via Bluetooth. All this works together to record your data and capture footage as you see fit.

The connector works with most vehicles manufactured after 1996 and tracks your speed, engine performance and g-forces pulled on the car, amongst other specs. Waylens’ iOS app then looks at the data recorded and marks special events along the way, like 0-60 time or hard turns. This simplifies video editing as those moments are generally amongst the most noteworthy.

Of course, recording can be handled through the steering wheel remote control. It also uses built-in GPS and an on-board motion sensor to record data about your ride. All of this information is collected within the app and can be uploaded to your social profiles or online video sites like YouTube.

So why not just buy a GoPro HERO4 and attach it to your windshield? Pricing for one. The Waylene has a current pledge price tag of $299, which includes all of the pieces necessary to get started. A similar setup with a GoPro, minus the tracking data, would cost upwards of $200 more when you consider the prices of accessories needed. Additionally, the software automation side of it and engine connectivity are value worth noting as well.

With 26 days remaining, Waylens has raised nearly $259,000, easily surpassing its initial goal of $55,000. Having already raised over $2.2 million in capital, it’s safe to assume this project will be fully shipped to purchasers.
