Mohu launches a “high-end” speaker with built-in Android display, save 10%

Mohu – makers of consumer-favorite over-the-air antennas – has entered the “world of high-end” audio. Yes, you read that right. Mohu has released the BeBox, a $499 portable sound system with a built-in Android tablet.

Leaning heavily on its experience with Android’s operating system learned from Mohu Channels, the antenna-gone-speaker manufacturer feels that it can compete in this space.

Mohu’s BeBox looks much like other portable wireless sound systems on the market today. Similarly, it has many of the same features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, built-in USB ports and access to a myriad of streaming sources. There are five speakers built-in, including a six-inch long woofer, two dome tweeters and a pair of mid-range drivers. Mohu claims its system will “fill a room with warm, deep bass, lifelike clarity and a full range of sound”.

“Our mission in the TV cord-cutting world has always focused on giving consumers choice, simplicity and the best entertainment experience possible,” said Mark Buff founder and CEO of Mohu. “We’re taking that same spirit to music lovers, who crave big sound and the flexibility to access all of their audio listening experiences simply. By reaching back in time to the boombox for inspiration, we’ve upgraded it with a powerful Android tablet to give listeners the audio experience that even Marty McFly would be proud to discover.”

The BeBox defers from others in that it has a built-in Android tablet and touchscreen display for navigating through menus and finding music. While an Android tablet may not be my first choice for quality, the approach of having a touchscreen display sets Mohu’s newest release apart from similar offerings at this price point. The system runs on Android OS 4.4.2 and is powered by a ARM Cortex A7 quad-core processor.

Mohu has included an eight hour battery for on-the-go listening as well as a microUSB slot for adding your own music. From the outset, users will be able to access music libraries from the Google Play Store as well as other sources.

At $499, Mohu has some convincing to do. Many consumers are more likely to opt for trusted and established brands like Bose when looking to spend this much money. On the other hand, price-conscious consumers may be more likely to reach for a Bluetooth option from JBL or UE. It will be interesting to follow the path of the Mohu BeBox as it tries to establish itself amongst more notable names in the industry. The Mohu BeBox is available today for a special price of $449 when promo code LAUNCHPARTY is applied during checkout.

Looking for an all-in-one wireless solution? We recommend the SONOS PLAY:1 Starter Pack which includes two speakers at a special $349 price during the holidays.
