DODOcase has long been involved in Google’s Cardboard and virtual reality technology. After first introducing two $25 options last summer, the brand has announced a new kit on Indiegogo this morning.
The SMARTvr Virtual Reality Viewer is available for pre-order today with a focus on improved build-quality and a fresh design. DODOcase has built its latest release for both Android and iPhone. Full details and pricing after the break.
Described by DODOcase as an “ultra portable, lightweight smartphone virtual reality viewer”, the latest iteration drops the cardboard in favor of microsuede-lined design. The SMARTvr is compatible with nearly every smartphone device on the market today from Apple and Android manufacturers. It is capable of handling larger devices like the iPhone 6s Plus and Samsung’s Galaxy line.
DODO has stepped up the design this time around. Aside from the upgraded materials, the new SMARTvr is collapsable, so it can be tossed in your bag or pocket when not in use. Additionally, it is built with metal hinges to help keep the viewer in-tact, which was not a strength of the original cardboard models. Today’s release uses 34mm biconvex lenses that enable a 100-degree field of view, which is the “largest of any pocket viewer” currently available. While the previous generation had its merits, the upgraded internals is a welcome change.
Unlike Mattel’s View-Master kit, DODO’s latest release can be used with a variety of apps and isn’t locked into one proprietary source. Examples include the New York Times and the Discovery Channel’s library of virtual reality content. It is certified by Google’s Works with Cardboard program, so it will function properly with many Android-friendly VR apps.
The DODOcase SMARTvr Virtual Reality kit campaign launched on Indiegogo just a few hours ago. At the time of publishing, it has raised over $5,000. Currently a pledge of $28 + shipping will deliver a kit in June. This special early bird pricing is only available through the first week of the campaign.
In the meantime, we recommend checking out a few of these VR options over at Amazon. Mattel’s View-Master is the best-selling kit of its kind and is available for $19 Prime shipped right now. You’ll want to pick up a couple of experience packs to complete the setup. Learn more about the upcoming second generation in our release coverage.
If you’re after a more robust virtual reality option, we recommend DESTEK’s 3D Kit for $40 Prime shipped. It is compatible with iPhone and Android plus over “300 VR apps”.
