Everyone likes to talk about coffee makers, whether AeroPress or Chemex is better or if Keurig has ruined our society for good java. Truth is, your coffee grinder is just as important to the process as your brewer. You have to start with a Burr-style grinder. It’s the best way to prep your beans for maximum flavor extraction. But evidently, there is a way to make it even better…
A new Kickstarter campaign brings us a Wi-Fi-connected coffee grinder that “measures bean freshness” and automatically replenishes your supply when it runs low. Sort of like Amazon’s Dash Replenishment Service meets an elite nose for coffee…
Voltaire is labeled “the world’s first high-performance portable grinder” thanks to a proprietary Internet of Things sensing platform and connected smartphone app. Users will be able to measure how fresh their beans are and adjust accordingly. Push notifications will be sent to your device when it’s time to re-up. There is a built-in battery that should last most users around three weeks, according to the manufacturer. So you’ll be able to move it around freely without concern for a nearby outlet.
As you’d expect from a product like this, Voltaire has a very modern and Apple-like design. An off-white color blends with Rose Gold accents to standout in your kitchen. There is no word on the technology behind these built-in sensors.
You’ll just have to take Voltaire’s word for it that the system is able to accurately predict when your beans go bad. Technology aside, it would be a surprise to us if Voltaire’s design isn’t very attractive to coffee heads looking for an alternative to your classic grinder.
Voltaire has also created a lineup of accessories that go along with its new creation. A pour-over stand, steel/copper tamper and a marble tray are all available as add-ons during the Kickstarter period. Currently a pledge of $199 will deliver a grinder next Spring if all goes to plan. At the time of publishing, this project has raised just over 58% of its $100,000 goal.
Looking for a new grinder but don’t need all the extras? Our top-pick is this Cuisinart Burr Grinder for $44.99 Prime shipped. It is the best-selling product of its kind with a 3.9/5 star rating from over 3,400 Amazon customers.
