Today, TP-Link announced that a handful of its Wi-Fi-enabled LED Light bulbs received full Alexa voice control. This upgrade allows users to change colors and activate other functionality without reaching for a smartphone app. This news specifically effects the LB120 and LB130 models.
We’ve long been fans of TP-Link’s Wi-Fi Smart Light Bulbs, primarily because of its lack of a required add-on hub (unlike Philips Hue). As well, prices start at $20, which is very affordable.
Add in today’s news of full Alexa compatibility and the entry-point to a smart home lighting setup is more accessible than ever before. The TP-Link lineup is an excellent way to ease into smart home functionality with just enough features to get started.
It’s not without its downfalls, however. TP-Link’s LED light bulbs are not compatible with the Apple HomeKit ecosystem. But if you’re an Alexa user, that trade-off is less of an issue.
The LB120 model offers 2700k – 6500K soft white to daylight shades, while the pricier LB130 brings 2500K – 9000K plus a full range of colors. Each light bulb can also be controlled via the TP-Link Kasa smartphone app. Learn more about the entire lineup here.
Control the Colors of TP-Link® Smart Bulbs with Amazon Alexa
BREA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–TP-Link®, a leading global provider of consumer and business networking products, today announced that consumers may now control the color-change and white-tuning features of their TP-Link Smart Bulbs via the Amazon Alexa “TP-Link Kasa” smart home skill. With this updated skill, consumers can use simple voice commands via Amazon Alexa to change the color of their LB130 smart bulbs and the white-tuning of both their LB120 and LB130 Smart Bulbs.
These new smart home skill features were developed through close collaboration between Silicon Valley-based TP-Link Research America (TPRA), TP-Link’s smart home solutions team and the Amazon Alexa team.
“TP-Link’s dedicated research and development team always strives for new ways to enhance the smart home experience of our customers,” said David Li, CEO of TP-Link Research America Corporation. “Our successful ongoing integration with Amazon Alexa allows us to continue developing new ways for consumers to personalize their smart homes.”
The enhanced Amazon Alexa smart home skill for TP-Link Kasa makes it easier than ever to select the perfect lighting for any mood or setting. Users can ask Alexa to make bedroom lights warm white in the evening to improve sleep or ask Alexa to set the office to cool white, to help concentrate on work. It’s also easier than ever to adjust brightness levels, change the temperature of white light or quickly flip the lights to the colors of your favorite sports team. You can even change the color to a romantic pink or bold red for date night, simply using the sound of your voice.
“TP-Link is strongly committed to the smart home category,” said Lewis Wu, executive vice president at TP-Link USA. “Through our relationship with Amazon’s Alexa team, we continue to find new ways to innovate and offer consumers feature-rich products that will make their lives easier.”
In order to use Amazon Alexa voice control to change the color or color temperature of TP-Link Smart Bulbs, consumers will first need to pair their TP-Link LB120 or TP-Link LB130 Smart Bulbs with their device with Amazon Alexa. Once paired, they may begin using voice control to apply these features. Existing TP-Link Kasa app users whose smart home devices are already paired with their device with Amazon Alexa do not need to take any steps to enjoy this new feature.
