Knitting has never really seemed like a modern day past time. At least, it hasn’t struck me as an activity that I’d enjoy. Kniterate has changed my mind. This Kickstarter hit has raised over $325,000 and has become the coolest way to make a sweater, gloves or scarf along the way.
Instead of recreating the typical sewing machine design we’ve come to know over the last 20 years, Kniterate has reimagined sewing from the stitch up. And I’ve got to say, it’s pretty cool.
This crowdfunding darling brings knitting into the 21st century with a fresh take on industrial machines. Like anything else these days, Kniterate has an entire software backend that allows users to design a wide range of clothing items right on their Mac or PC. It starts with standard or custom templates that can be customized with your own designs and colors. The entire thing really is intriguing.
One of the most attractive features of Kniterate is that it takes any potentially confusing aspects of sewing out of the equation. All you’ll need to do is load up a design and make sure that your unit is stocked with the correct materials and the hardware will take care of the rest.
Kniterate hopes to build a strong community of creators that share designs and inspiration as a part of its success. Imagine wanting a new sweater, popping onto the app and scrolling through thousands of designs until you find just the right look? All the while skipping the trip to the mall. Sounds great to me.
At the time of writing, Kniterate has raised nearly $330,000 with 27 days remaining in its campaign. Interested? Brace yourself. It’ll take a pledge of $4,699 with an April 2018 delivery date. That’s a big ask and wait for interested parties, but the end result could be pretty cool for makers across the world.
