If your daily commute relies on a bicycle, you’ve probably spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect ride. Announced as a prototype back in 2013, Superpedestrian is finally ready to bring its smart Copenhagen Wheel to the market. As the name suggestions, the device wraps full eBike functionality into one neat, wheel-based package. Weighing in at 16.8 lbs, the wheel is heavier than your typical bicycle wheel, but still light compared to other eBikes. Most notably, Copenhagen Wheel sports a bright red paint job.
While the wheel doesn’t necessarily standout from a design perspective, it’s quite the opposite feature-wise. Sporting a 48-volt battery, Copenhagen Wheel can reach top speeds of 20 MPH within a 30 mile range. The smart wheel’s propulsion system detects the slightest motion from a rider and assists their pedaling to as much as 10 times the speed and power. This provides the extra oomph to ensure that racing to work or climbing steep hills is as effortless as possible.
Pairing the Copenhagen Wheel via Bluetooth to its iOS and Android companion app, riders can tweak the level of boost they receive, opt for conserving battery or even increased resistance for working out, among other drive settings. The app also tracks a rider’s metrics such as the route they took, average speed, distance duration and more.
It also comes equipped with several safety-oriented features such as self-diagnosis to help detect possible malfunctions, as well as the ability to prevent theft by manually locking the wheel. Thanks to integrated proximity sensors Copenhagen Wheel is intelligent enough to detect the rider’s presence and automatically unlock the wheel prior to the start of a new ride.
The wheel can currently be purchased from Superpedestrian’s website and as long as stock permits, is available for shipping now. Prices start at $1,499 for just the bike wheel itself, but an entire bicycle can also be purchased for $1,999. A financing option is also available as well, which allows you to pay as little $91 a month for the wheel, and $121 for the complete assembly.
