Over the past few years, drones have grown increasingly popular for taking phenomenal 4K video. Not only is the video quality great, but the angles that can be captured with drones are amazing for use in a nice post-event video or promo.
As far as video producing goes, you could say that with great video quality, comes great responsibility. It is generally a good idea to have a method of backing up your footage, and with large 4K video files, microSD Cards get filled up rather quickly. Realizing this, Seagate and DJI have together created something called the Fly Drive.
According to the two companies, managing the surge of drone data will be much easier with their new product. The Fly Drive includes a special integrated microSD card slot, meant for quick transfer speeds directly from the drone’s memory card. Thanks to its large storage capacity of 2TB and durable build, it’s a useful item to carry along on your drone journeys. Also included is a built-in protective bumper which houses the USB-C cable for convenience.
The 2TB storage capacity in the Fly Drive equates to more than 60 hours of 4K 30fps video footage. For DJI’s Mavic Pro drone, that means more than 250 flights worth of content.
When you buy the Fly Drive, you also get a complimentary two-month subscription to Adobe Premiere Pro CC, which is part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud service. As a highly rated and professionally-used video-editing software, that’s not a bad deal considering it’s a $19.99 per month value based on the annual subscription price.
Now, this will work on any Mac or PC with a USB or Thunderbolt 3 port. But the question is, why is Seagate and DJI advertising a small and portable product if you still need to bring a laptop with you in order to do this transfer? The way they advertise it, it seems like this new hard drive should somehow be able to automatically transfer new video content that has been recorded onto the microSD Card by the drone. Clearly that is not the case.
If you have no room on your computer for large 4K video files, and especially if your computer has no SD Card slot, then this is probably an ideal product for you. Otherwise, it seems as though any other 2TB drive could be just as useful.
The Seagate DJI Fly Drive is expected to be available this summer for $120.
