DJI keeps it coming with new VR Goggles for Phantom and more

DJI is well-known for its consumer-friendly drones. As many Phantom fans are aware, the way to control it is via the remote that comes in the box, along with a smartphone as the viewing screen. Seeing what the drone can see from all the way up there, I thought, was a very cool experience.

That being said, it seems like DJI is not quite finished announcing new products this month. Just a few days ago, the DJI Goggles were announced to the world. The Mavic Pro, Phantom 4, and Inspire drones will be compatible with DJI’s latest release right out of the box.

The bulky headset that it is, the DJI Goggles actually pack quite the punch. Supposedly the video that you see with these do not look overly pixelated like many VR headsets we’ve seen. From experience, I know that Google Cardboard definitely did not excel in that area.

A very notable feature, however, is the ability to control the camera with the headset while flying the drone. This makes the experience all the more real, and simply by turning your head, the drone’s camera will track and follow that motion to show you what you’d like to see. If you choose to do so, there is also an option to have someone else control the drone while you wear the headset.

Regarding details, the headset includes one viewing mode in 720p resolution at 60fps and another mode in 1080p at 30fps. Each eye gets a really nice 1920×1080 resolution. Additionally, there is a touch pad for navigating menus and a solid 6 hours of battery life.

The goggles are great to use with DJI’s new intelligent flight mode, called Fixed-Wing Mode. By using this, the aircraft doesn’t turn left or right, but flies forward with enough rotational movement for realistic flight simulation. When this is used along with the head tracking feature, you get a fully realized flight experience.

For maximum comfort, the DJI Goggles are specially designed with a headband that balances and spreads the weight around evenly. I have not tried many comfortable VR headsets, so hopefully this is a step up. Even for people like me who wear glasses, it will supposedly be just as comfortable, which is great news.

Inputs include Micro USB, a microSD card slot, HDMI, and a headphone jack.

The DJI Goggles are available for pre-order today, and deliveries beginning at the end of May.
