Tinboard electric skateboard sports premium features at an affordable price

Note: looks like Tinboard’s site and Twitter has been taken down due to legal issues.

Practically all of the electric vehicles we’ve covered have been of the two or even three-wheeled variety. While eBikes may be great for some, electric skateboards have begun to grow in popularity, suiting the needs of those looking for something a little more minimal and adventurous. The recently announced Tinboard electric skateboard encompasses both these with two models that will soon be available for preorder.

Electric skateboards aren’t a new product, available competitors like Boosted Board have been popular for quite some time. However most of the existing models are pretty costly, which is what makes Tinboard so eye-catching. Not only does it look to offer the same features and high quality design as its competition, but at a more affordable price.

A reoccurring theme among most electric vehicles is that they cost upwards of $1,000. Tinboard is hoping to bring a comparable, if not better product to the masses starting at a preorder price of $399.

Comprised of a lightweight Carbon Fibre desk, Tinboard weighs in at just under 10-lbs. While the company has strove for a more minimal design approach, this hasn’t sacrificed anything in the features department. Tinboard sports tons of added functionality like a built-in GPS unit for tracking, headlights for improved visibility in low-light conditions and more.

In terms of defining standout features, Tinboard sports something it calls ‘Regenerative Breaking’, which allows the skateboard to covert the energy typically lost when stopping back into power for the battery. This not only accomplishes a safer vehicle, but also prolongs one’s riding times.

Surprisingly enough, Tinboard can also reach a top speed of 24 miles per hour, which is faster than some of the eBikes we’ve covered. You can expect to travel around 15 miles per change, which is fairly standard for a vehicle of this size.

As with most of the recently announced electric vehicles, Tinboard also pairs with a companion iOS and Android application. In this case, the app allows you to monitor the skateboard’s battery levels, tweak LED headlight brightness and even locate your ride if its misplaced or stolen. In the off-chance that you forget your control remote, you’ll also be able to control the current speed while riding.

Depending on your needs or riding desires, there are two different models of Tinboard available; a choice which helps the company stand out from the competition. The Street variant is fairly similar to other available boards and is the more general purpose option, geared towards casual suburban or city riding.

The All-Terrain Tinboard version on the other hand amplifies the power of the Street model and swaps out the easy-going cruising wheels for much more rugged ones. Instead of the 2-wheel drive system available on the regular model, Tinboard All-Terrain sports more capable 4-wheel drive to tackle outdoor conditions. Tinboard is also waterproof, to ensure that fear of water doesn’t get in the way of your adventures.

Compared to some of the other electric skateboards focused on all-terrain riding, Tinboard is much more practical. While it does weigh 15-lbs, 5 more than the Street variant, that’s still much less than others on the market. The slim Carbon Fibre deck also helps cut down on added bulk, making Tinboard easier to store when traveling.

If you’re dying to get your hands on one, Tinboard will be launching its preorder campaign in the next few days. Starting on June 7th, you’ll be able to preorder either model Tinboard for a limited time price of $399. After July 7th, the price will rise back to the eventual retail rate of $499. You can head over to Tinboard’s site to sign up for preorder notification and more.

Update: Tinboard is now available for preorder over on Indiegogo starting at the early bird special of $399 for the standard model, and $699 for the all-terrain version.
