Today Lenovo announced it’s celebrating 25 years of the ThinkPad by paying tribute to the original one that started it all from 1992. They’ve created a 25th anniversary edition ThinkPad that has a few retro stylings, but make no mistake, its all modern underneath the hood.
The ThinkPad 25 pays tribute with a few of the key features of the 1992 model, like a 7-row classic keyboard and the signature blue enter key. Also, it has a special edition ThinkPad 25 logo that definitely completes the retro look. But, that’s where the 1992 aspect of this laptop ends. The rest is very modern with specs like a 7th generation Intel Core i7 processor, Windows 10 Pro, and NVIDIA GeForce graphics. Not to mention Dolby Audio for premium sound and a 14-inch touchscreen display. Even better, you can stay unplugged with it for up to 14 hours from the internal battery.
It doesn’t stop there, it also has all the modern ports you would expect a 2017 laptop to have. For instance, it has a USB-C port, three regular USB ports, an SD card reader, HDMI port, and Ethernet connectivity. You can even find a fingerprint reader that lets you log into Windows 10.

As we all know, nostalgia comes at a price and that even goes for laptops. Pricing for this throwback beauty starts at a hefty $1,899 from Lenovo’s online store. This special edition will likely have limited quantities and be available for just a short time.
The tech landscape was a different place, then for sure. The web celebrated its first birthday. AOL dominated as an ISP. There was no Google. No Yahoo. Mobile phones, at least the lightweight smartphones we currently enjoy, had yet to be invented. Bluetooth and wireless were yet to even be dreamed of. Social media didn’t exist. Floppy disks were on every techie’s wish list. PCs cost several thousand dollars, and the functionality to multitask programs, run background processes, and automatically manage memory didn’t exist. Different, indeed.
