The past month has been big for new LEGO set releases, with the company unveiling a variety of themed-kits from Star Wars, Batman, and even the crowdfunding platform LEGO Ideas. And since our last roundup, plenty of noteworthy projects have popped up, all vying to be made a real set and added to store shelves.
But how exactly does a LEGO Ideas project go from simply a concept to a full-blown retailed set? Once submitted to the crowdfunding site, each project has to raise the support of 10,000 fans in order move onto the next stage in the process. Ideas have a limited time frame to meet the support minimum, which is adjusted throughout the campaign as milestones are hit. After garnering the 10,000 supporters, the set will make its way through a review phase where LEGO set designers determine if the model is a viable option for an official kit.
October’s project roundup is packed with planetary exploration vehicles, vintage motorcycles, winter villages and more. This month we’ll be eyeing up several recently launched campaigns along side some that have recently risen in popularity.
The Winter Village
With winter months quickly approaching, the recently submitted Winter Village set looks to be a great kit to get in the holiday spirit. As it stands now, the set is comprised of 2,500 pieces and features 2 buildings, a hot beverage stand, snowman and plenty of other accessories and details for your minifigures to enjoy. In less than a month the project has raised over 400 supporters and still has 420 days to gain the rest.
Vintage 1957 Harley Davidson Sportster XL
For fans of vintage vehicles, the brick-built recreation of Harley Davidson’s Sportster XL will be an awesome display piece for your desk or collection. It measures over a foot in length and features details from the vintage motorcycle like brake and clutch levers, fork boots, brake cables and steering system. The set also includes a tool box for even more authenticity. With more than 1,500 supporters and nearly 600 days to lock in the remaining votes, it has a solid chance to make it to store shelves.
I am Amelia Earhart
Following this week’s unveil of the new Women of NASA building kit, it’s no shock to see another set rising in popularity focusing on the achievements of women. Submitted back in early 2016, the set is based on a bestselling book series by Brad Meltzer and Chris Eliopoulos and pays homage to Amelia Earhart and her astonishing flighting records. As of now the kit consists of just under 200 pieces and features a bright yellow biplane alongside a minifigure of Amelia Earhart herself. The project has just under 200 days to raise another 3,400 supporters.
Mobile Planetary Explorer
Another popular build comes from the mind of creator w3rdna and recreates an epic 8-wheeled exploration vehicle. The Mobile Planetary Explorer is complete with working suspension system, a positionable crane, opening doors and engine compartment and more. Since its campaign launched, the Explorer has raised support from over 800 individuals and is well on its way towards the review phase. There’s still plenty of time as well, with 336 days remaining to lock in the rest of the supporters.
