In recent years, the fitness tracking movement has really grown in popularity, with Apple Watch and other smart devices offering insight into everything from our sleeping habits to physical activity. One of the lesser known players in the health tracking space was Oura, whose smart ring excelled at sleep monitoring. Now the company is back with a second generation of its ring that can tell you way more than just how well you slept last night.

Smartphone-aided health tracking devices typically fall into the form of a smart watch. Oura on the other hand has ditched the wrist and taken a different route, packing its health monitoring functionality into a ring form factor. With its second generation smart ring, Oura is looking to create a more general tracking device by bolstering its battery life, sensors, features and more.

The first model of Oura was touted as more of a sleep tracking ring than a device more comparable to Apple Watch or Fitbit. That’s changed with the recently unveiled second generation model which keeps its robust sleep tracking and adds a wide range features along with improving its design and companion smartphone application.

Oura Ring is comprised of a lightweight medical grade titanium casing which packs a 7-day battery life, gyroscope and PPG heart rate sensor. This array of sensors then allows the ring to track an extremely wide variety of aspects about your physical well-being like heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, breathing variance, body temperature and fitness stats, to name a few.

Alongside the launch of its latest ring, Oura will also be redesigning its iOS application to better track and show off the data it has collected. The new app will offer enhanced support for Apple’s own Health app and offer feedback based on your daily habits.

The ring is more intelligent this time around as well, thanks to an improved processor. Oura currently offers suggestions on improving your sleep, but with the release of the new model will boast circadian rhythm alignment suggestions and more. Other notable features include water resistance up to 100 meters and wireless charging.

Oura’s second generation smart ring is currently available for preorder starting at $299, with models climbing all the way up to just under $1,000. Shipping begins in April of 2018, which unfortunately means you won’t be able to gift Oura this holiday.

As someone who absolutely loves his Apple Watch and other smart health trackers, the Oura ring looks to be an extremely compelling accessory. With a focus on sleep tracking, Oura picks up where the Apple Watch slacks, not to mention the other stats the ring monitors. I don’t know about you, but Oura is an instant buy for someone as into health tracking as I am, one that I am eagerly awaiting.
