Nike Shox Gravity is a cushioned classic reborn in new Metallic Gold colorway

$150

Nike re-introduces a blast from the past sneaker aesthetic with the return of its Nike Shox footwear. The new Nike Shox Gravity harkens back to the original sneaker’s design while launching it forward into 2018.

At first glance, the Shox Gravity almost looks like an entirely new sneaker. Conceptually, the Gravity retains the cushioning ideals behind the original Shox, but brings it forward for new comfort. The Gravity’s quarter panel sports Nike’s Flywire cables which come together at the top into a speed lacing system. The heel is now covered in a large gold panel, adorned with Nike’s signature check logo.

What truly makes the new Shox Gravity stand out has to be the redesign of the classic cushioning system. No longer appearing as a stack of disks, the new mechanical cushioning appears as a metallic beam-like structure. Nike designer Aaron Cooper stated that he wanted to make sure wearers “feel like the Shox Gravity is giving you something back, and I really wanted to create the feeling of surfing on pavement or snowboarding in bottomless powder. That was part of the brief to myself, along with capturing the full-on elation of weightlessness.”

The Shox Gravity coup de grâce has to be its patterned outsole. Concentrically designed circles simulate energy moving outward from center points. Cooper states, “The texture in the four circles on the outsole is inspired by rocket engine scarification. The colors on the heel mimic the rocket blast, while white nods to the smoke from liftoff and the translucent forefoot speaks to the water in Florida.”

The new Nike Shox Gravity is available now from Nike.com in Metallic Gold for $150. Don’t miss out on any of our latest Nike coverage and deals by bookmarking our Nike guide.
