The 60th Year of the Brick assembles 6 new must-have Classic LEGO kits

Over the weekend, the LEGO brick we all know and love celebrated its 60th birthday. And in typical LEGO fashion, the company isn’t going to let the date go unnoticed. So to celebrate this monumental occasion, LEGO has announced that it will be expanding its lineup of Classic kits with 6 brand new sets in honor of the past 60 years of models.

LEGO kits have built their way towards being some of the most beloved toys and collectors items over the past 60 years. At the start of it was LEGO’s line of Classic sets that encouraged kids to assemble whatever creations came to mind. So in the same spirit of open-ended fun, the 60th anniversary kits will channel the same original sentiment.

Coinciding with the 60th Year of the Brick, LEGO has released 5 new products alongside a Walmart-exclusive retro-themed set. These new Classic sets variably priced to suit a range of LEGO fans, with the smallest starting at $5 and going all the way up to $60.

Starting at the low-end price point, the Build Bigger Thinking Rainbow Fun set is the least intensive of the new kits, but will serve as a nice set for younger builders. Retailing for $5, it includes 85 colorful pieces to assemble a variety of miniature models.

Entering in at a slightly higher price point, the World Fun kit retails for $20 and ups the part-count to 295 and 2 minifigures. And stepping up to $40, you’ll find the 579-piece Ocean’s Bottom set complete with more nautical-themed bricks and 2 minifigures as well. Both of these kits should offer more interesting building techniques that really embody the Classic lineup’s creativity.

If brick-built cars are more of your thing, Walmart’s Bricks on a Roll set packs 420 pieces to assemble a variety of different pre-designed vehicles alongside getting creative and coming up with your own. And at $30, it seems like one of the more compelling in the newly announced lineup.

The largest set in LEGO’s 60th anniversary announcement, the Mission to Mars kit, is certainly my favorite of the lot. At $60, it includes 871 pieces alongside 3 minifigures and space and other creativity-inducing builds. There’s the same colorful assortment of bricks as the other kits includes, but also comes with minifigure accessories and other more intricate elements.

All of these kits are sure to be big hits with younger fans of LEGO, but I’m sure even collectors will have some nostalgia-drive intent to score the kids while they can. The Classic sets aren’t necessarily my favorites overall, but when it comes to getting the most bang for your buck out of a LEGO kit, they surely are some of the best.
