While it may seem like there are several major retailers vying for our purchase dollars, there is really just one with a bunch of big names constantly on the chase. Amazon and its incredible Prime membership offers a level of value for shoppers that still isn’t matched anywhere else. Not only do the Prime membership perks at Amazon continue to grow every month, but that guaranteed free two-day shipping really can’t be beat.

Retailers like Walmart and Best Buy do have their own member programs with special perks, but the sheer selection of goods and fantastic pricing makes it hard to compete with everyone’s favorite online retail giant. While Target’s REDcard program knocks 5% off every purchase, the national retailer is now introducing free two-day shipping on a massive selection of goods online.

Despite the uphill battle Target will imminently be fighting against Amazon for the foreseeable future, the company reported a 29% jump in online sales over the fourth quarter and looks to be pushing forward with the new speedy shipping option. Clearly this kind of service is going to take a bite out of Target’s bottom line, but it is going to have to keep things exciting to continue its upward trend.

Reports suggest Target will minimize costs by using its over 1,800 brick and mortar locations as fulfillment centers for online orders. It might not be as efficient a solution, but anything the company can do to keep costs down while expanding the value of its online marketplace is likely a good thing.

Specifically, Target is now offering free two-day shipping on orders over $35 and for its REDcard holders. While Walmart started offering a similar service on a growing number of items about a year ago now, Target said it will now be doing the same on “hundreds of thousands of items”.

Target’s site is already promoting the new shipping service:

Spend $35+ or use your REDcard & get free 2-day shipping. Eligible items will be noted on the product detail page, in cart & at check out. Handling fees & exclusions may apply.

While selection will certainly be limited to some degree from the get-go, you can bet Target will be looking to expand the offerings over the coming months leading into the summer, and ultimately, the busy 2018 shopping season.
