LEGO celebrates the minifigure’s 40th birthday w/ new party-themed collectible figure series

Following announcements of new Star Wars, Marvel and Harry Potter sets, LEGO has kicked off 2018 with a bang. Having already celebrated the brick’s 60th anniversary, LEGO is now commemorating the 40th birthday of the Minifigure. So in order to get the party started, LEGO has launched its next lineup of Collectible Minifigures. Stacking up to 17 new characters, the series packs a variety of party-themed figures alongside a replica of the first minifigure from back in 1978.

As we had covered at Toy Fair, LEGO will soon be launching its 27th Collectible Minifigure Series. Last year brought with it Series 17 of the collectible figs, alongside a new lineup of Batman characters. And so to kick of 2018, LEGO has unwrapped its new Party-themed figures to coincide the 40th anniversary of the Minifigure.

This time around, the set contains 16 different minifigures which all come with the expected display stand and different assortments of accessories. There are quite a few new elements here that LEGO builders will love to get their hands on like balloon dogs, dragon wings, balloons and more. LEGO’s new cast of minifigures are as delightful as ever as well, with characters adorning cactus and LEGO brick costumes alongside a cowboy, race car driver, flower and more, to name some of our favorites.

Of course the real standout here is a replica of LEGO’s first ever minifigure, the 1978 Police Officer. This rare figure sports the same outfit that they donned 40 years ago. The replica minifigure also includes a miniature box for the original set they debuted in back in the late 1970’s. This certainly isn’t the flashiest of the new minifigures, but it’ll certainly be the one LEGO fans desire most to have in their collections.

The latest Collectible Minifigures series will be hitting store shelves come April 1st. Just as with previous minifigure sets, the Party series too will sell for $3.99 each. That means picking up all 16 of the figures will set you back just under $65, that is, if you’re lucky enough to avoid grabbing any duplicates.

LEGO is also debuting a new addition to its BrickHeadz lineup in the form of an entirely customizable figure. The Go Brick Me set, as the name suggests, is based around recreating your own likeness in the new BrickHeadz style and it includes a variety of elements and accessories to get the job done. It stacks up to over 700 pieces in total and has enough to create 2 separate custom figures.

We’re big fans of BrickHeadz here at Toys, so be on the lookout for an in-depth review come April 1st when it debuts for $30.
