The new Shadow of the Tomb Raider leaks ahead of tomorrow’s big announcement

(Update 3/15 10.25am): Square Enix has now officially unveiled Shadow of the Tomb Raider and the debut trailer down below. The full reveal hits on April 27th.

It has been a few years now since we saw the last entry in the now rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider was a success for the folks at Square Enix and rumors over the last year or more have pointed at a direct follow-up being in the works. After possible titles for the next game leaked via an unfortunate subway incident, followed by other spotty rumors, we now know Shadow of the Tomb Raider is coming out this year.

The iconic Tomb Raider series hit the scene with the release of the debut title in 1996. Its success prompted the game’s original developers to release a new game every year for the foreseeable future leading up to Square Enix’s acquisition of the franchise through its purchase of Eidos in 2009. The game has since sold over 63 million copies worldwide and was rebooted in 2013 with a sequel two years later.

Square Enix has launched a teaser countdown clock on the official Tomb Raider site pointing to a special announcement coming tomorrow around 9am EST. While most would likely be hoping for a the next console iteration but expecting some disappointing mobile title instead, details regarding tomorrow’s announcement have already been scraped from the page for your convenience.

The page offers a vague white symbol with the text:

MARCH 15TH, 2018 6:00AM PDT

But a closer look reveals a little more detail:

Shadow of The Tomb Raider is the climatic finale of Lara’s origin story. Available September 14th 2018

If the data pulled from the HTML on the new page is indeed true, and there’s no good reason it wouldn’t be, the next Tomb Raider game will be called Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It will be released in September of this year, and will be officially unveiled tomorrow morning.

We also know from reports the game will instead be developed by Eidos Montreal, the team behind Thief and the modern Deus Ex titles. The first two games in the newly rebooted franchise came courtesy of the folks at Crystal Dynamics, who are reported to be working on an unannounced Guardians of the Galaxy title at this point.

While nothing is confirmed outside of tomorrow’s announcement, most of this looks totally legit to us. Just about all of the early leaked material lines up and it sounds like reveiewers have already been invited to go check the game out.

The news comes just ahead of the theatrical release of the new Tomb Raider movie, which is scheduled to hit the box office on March 16th.

Experience Lara Croft’s defining moment as she becomes the Tomb Raider. Available September 14th, 2018.
