It was over a year ago that Amazon first introduced Echo Look, a solution for fashion-focused technology enthusiasts looking to leverage the online retailer’s clothing offerings. In that time we’ve seen a bevy of new Echo and Alexa-enabled devices with little update on Amazon’s plan for the device. Fast forward to today and the long-term goals of Echo Look are still unclear but it’s finally out of beta and available to purchase by all.

What is Echo Look? |

At its core, Echo Look delivers many of the same Alexa-enabled features that Amazon has been pushing so diligently over the last few years. Where it differs is the built-in camera that enables this device to interact with users in a whole new way.

Echo Look is rather small in size, just six-inches in height and a mere two-inches wide. It’s designed to be less noticeable than its counterparts in the Echo lineup. The camera itself sits upon a tripod that can be adjusted for the right view. A built-in LED light, camera and microphone array handle communication between user and the device.

How Does Style Check Work? |

Aside from the standard Alexa features we’ve all come to know in recent years, Echo Look delivers a mode called ‘Style Check’. This is where Amazon diverts from its usual Echo gameplan and one of the main reasons that this device was in beta for so long.

Style Check is designed around a special algorithm that identifies trends and how one might improve an outfit. In theory it seems somewhat silly, but for fashion-focused users there may be practicality here. Over time, Amazon will catalog your outfits and identify potential listings within its inventory that might interest you.

Amazon is also able to make recommendations between various outfits, as well. If you take two photos with Echo Look and submit them to Style Check, the app will then make a recommendation on which one is more flattering for your body type. It’s hard to say if Amazon really delivers much value in this area, but it’s an interesting glimpse into the future where something like this might be more popular.

Is Echo Look for me? |

It’s difficult to give Echo Look any type of rousing recommendations at this point. At $200, it’s on the pricier side of Amazon’s Echo lineup, given recent privacy concerns, adding a camera to the mix could be a potential worry for some.

That said, Echo Look offers a fun glimpse into what the future may hold. There are some unique features that may be worth it for some. It’s an investment at $200 that may useful for the most forward-thinking Amazon fans.
