Airstream intros more rugged Basecamp X designed for outdoor adventures

Airstream has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years as interest in traveling across all ages has increased significantly. The travel-trailer life isn’t just for retired folks anymore, as millennials have found joy in seeing the country, or world for that matter, at their own pace.

Looking to cash in on those trends, Airstream has expanded its offerings, even making the move to drop its iconic aluminum design in recent months. This week it has announced its latest release, a revamped version of its slimline Basecamp that’s design for “extreme adventures”. Starting at under $40,000, the newest member of the Airstream family is sure to appeal to a broad spectrum of travelers.

Airstream first announced the Basecamp back in 2016 as a stripped-down alternative to its larger offerings. Designed to be hauled by mid-size SUVs, and some electric vehicles, it comes in at 16-feet long and just over 2,600-pounds. While the original model sold for under $35,000, today’s release delivers a handful of upgrades at the trade-off of an extra $5,000 added to your bill.

Today’s release holds tight to some of the original’s specs, including a full shower and bath, two burner stove, and fridge. There’s enough room for two to “sleep comfortably” and the bed space can be converted to a living room type setup when needed.

“Our Basecamp X encourages you to go on bigger adventures,” said Airstream CEO and President, Bob Wheeler. “You can tackle rough roads and cold-weather driving with confidence. “The higher departure angle along with the aerodynamic design opens up a new world to explore.”

Airstream is taking the 2016 release and upgrading it with a handful of new add-ons and slight body tweaks. A three-inch lift kit offers increased clearance, which was a complaint about the original when it was faced with touch terrain in some instances. The same can be said for its redesigned wheels that ship with off-road Goodyear tires. Airstream also upgraded the front wrap with a new stainless steel build that’s made to protect it from any free-flying stones you might encounter.

The new Basecamp X is available direct from authorized Airstream retailers starting this week. It has a list price of $39,600 with various upgrades available for purchase.
