Sennheiser’s Memory Mic wirelessly records high-quality audio for your home iPhone movies

These days our iPhones provide some of the best and most convenient ways to capture special moments on video. While they will surely get the job done for your casual videographer, including live location audio from the subjects in the shot in combination with the ambient noise of the setting isn’t always that simple. Whether it’s wind noise or just a busy public area, picking up high quality voices and things of that nature with basic iPhone videos can be a chore at best.

Clearly, some kind of mic system is needed to ensure you get high quality voices and there are some options out there for that specifically tailored to mobile recording environments. But the new Sennheiser Memory Mic looks to bring a level of simplicity to the whole process, but does the functionality here justify the somewhat steep price tag?

Memory Mic is simple at its core. It is basically a wireless microphone that you can attach to the subject in the shot magnetically. That way you can pick up high quality audio on your iPhone video no matter how far away the subject is (within reason). It can record up to 4 hours of audio on a single charge before it will need to get juiced up again via USB-C.

Memory Mic essentially beams the recorded audio to your companion app where you can choose the level (balance) between the ambient noise your phone picked up and the direct audio from Memory Mic. It basically takes a somewhat complicated mobile lavalier mic setup and focuses it down to something just complex enough for Dad to get his son’s first bike ride with great audio.

On paper it sounds like a great idea, but the sheer size of the Memory Mic and its lack of AI to determine when it should start recording the adorable things coming out of your kid’s mouth, might set it back a notch. The $200 price tag might be a bit steep for some as well. Having said all that, it’s hard to put a price on your memories, so this might be worth taking a look at.

Here’s a little video of Sennheiser showing Memory Mic being used to capture a child’s very first bike ride. Needless to say, it’s hard to complain about the oddly large footprint of the mic and its price after watching this video.

The new microphone is available now from Amazon and B&H for $199.99 shipped.
