AMD’s 2nd Generation Threadripper is a ‘record-breaking’ processor that starts at $649 for 12 cores

AMD has been on a warpath to take the #1 spot from Intel when it comes to processors. With Ryzen, AMD started to rise to the top again, and Threadripper is a great contender when it comes to high-end desktops. AMD is back at it again with its second generation of Threadripper processors, and the highest-end version is available for purchase starting today.

The highest-end of this lineup is the 2990WX, sporting 32 cores and 64 logical processors. The TDP of this processor is 250W, meaning you’ll need a high-powered power supply in order to keep it running. With 64 PCIe lanes, you’ll be set for running any number of expansion cards, from GPUs to powerful SSDs.

You’ll get a base clock of 3.0GHz and a boost to 4.2GHz, giving you tons of processing power for multi-threaded workflows. This is perfect for the content creator or someone who needs high-end computational resources, like 3D rendering or AutoCAD.

With a retail price of $1,799, the 2990WC is available starting today from B&H.

The 2970WX packs 24 threads and 48 logical processors, a 250W TDP, 64 PCIe lanes, and the same clock frequencies of 3GHz and 4.2GHz boost. This has a much more approachable price of $1,299 and still gives killer processing power for those who need it.

If you don’t need 48 logical threads or even the insane 64, you can step down to the 16 core 32 thread 2950X. This processor has a 180W TDP, 64 lanes of PCIe, and a 3.5GHz base clock with a 4.4GHz boost.

With a price of $899, this is coming down into the realm of regular content creators, and with 32 threads, there’s still plenty of processing power here. This is probably where most creators will land who want a high-end system without spending a ton of money.

If that’s still a bit too much for you, there’s the 2920X with 12 cores and 24 threads. This has a 180W TDP, 64 PCIe lanes, and a 3.5GHz clock and 4.3GHz boost. With an entry price of $649, this is the most budget-friendly of the series and is great for those who need more than what you can get from consumer-grade processors but can’t afford the higher-end offerings.

The 2970WX and 2920X will be available in October 2018, and the 2950X is slated to be available at the end of the month.

AMD’s 2nd Generation Threadripper has broken world-records with Cinebench R15 and is one of the highest-powered processors on the market for consumers and professionals outside of server grade offerings.
