Henry Cavill is set to play Geralt of Rivia in upcoming Witcher Netflix series

While the entire gaming world is still fixated on CD Projekt’s new Cyberpunk 2077 footage that finally released last week to the public for the first time, the franchise that put the studio on the map is making headlines today. The Witcher series, its main character Geralt and the world it all exists in has been the main bread and butter over at CD Projekt for many years. While the game series is taking a major hiatus, an upcoming Netflix series will attempt to give new life to the legendary monster slayer.

The Witcher Netflix series has been in the works now for well over a year, as we first heard word back in May of 2017. As you likely know, these game series crossovers rarely pan out the way the IP’s existing fan base would like them too. However, with the moderate success of the Castlevania Netflix series (which is about to start season 2 in a couple of months), a new confidence seems to be looming over these kinds of projects. While The Witcher will not be an animated adaption like Castlevania, hopefully it can tap into some of the grit and appeal of Game of Thrones and the like while still maintaining true to the source material.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s The Witcher Netflix series will be entirely based on the novels of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski rather than following the stories of the games.

It now appears we have details on who will be bringing protagonist Geralt of Rivia to life. None other than Superman himself. Henry Cavill took to his official Instagram account this morning to drop the news, before Netflix and Hissrich later confirmed.

Cavill had this to say:

My new mailing address is:

Geralt

C/O Vesemir

Kaer Morhen

Kaer Morhen Valley

Hertch

Kaedwen

Please note, I’m rarely there. Monster slaying being what it is. So, replies will be few and far between, if at all.

As you can see in Tweet above, Netflix has also confirmed the first season will be 8 episodes long.

Show head Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said Cavill was the very first choice, even before the script was penned, and has had the gig for about 4 months now: “I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been. I’m so thrilled to welcome HENRY CAVILL to the #Witcher family.”

Here’s a fan rendering of Cavill as Geralt of Rivia via his Instagram account:

No time frame has been set for release on the show order, but we will keep you updated as the first footage/trailers hit the net.
