New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe releases today on Switch w/ a secret playable character

Mario Day game deals

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe releases today on Switch. A deluxe version port of the 2012 Wii U game, it brings some classic-style (nearly) 2D platforming to the system with a series of add-ons and more. Head below for all the details and one playable character you may not have known about.

New Super Mario Bros. U was originally released on what is arguably one of Nintendo’s most poorly-received home consoles in the Wii U. The game did well with over 6 million copies sold. But that not’s really the kind of number we expect for flagship Mario games. New Super Mario Bros. for DS — a game that by most accounts is somewhat forgettable by comparison — sold 30 million copies.

Considering New Super Mario Bros. U probably didn’t get played by as many gamers as it should have, this is a great way to re-introduce players to one of the best classic-style Mario titles in recent memory. Super Mario Odyssey was a triumph in its own right, but didn’t really scratch the vintage 2D Mario platforming itch.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is essentially an enhanced version of the Wii U title for Switch. Obviously you can now play it on-the-go via the Switch tablet but Nintendo has also introduced some additional features. It also bundles in the Luigi themed add-on for grand total of around 160 stages.

New Playable Characters:

Most notable of the new features is the new playable characters that are, at least to some degree, designed to make the game a little bit easier. Along with the 4-player multiplayer, there are a pair of new playable characters including Nabit and Toadette, who can transform into Peachette with an in-game power-up. That’s on top of Mario, Luigi and Toad.

The original version of the game included Mario and Luigi along with generic blue or yellow Toad characters. They were essentially there to make sense of the 4-way multiplayer mode, but it seemed as though Blue Toad wouldn’t be making an appearance in the Deluxe version ahead of release. However, that is not the case and gamers have already figured out how to flip out for your favorite Blue version of Toad.

Blue Toad!

As you can see in the video above, all you need to do is hold L or ZL as you’re highlighted on Yellow Toad in the character selection screen. Blue Toad appears in all his glory just like that! However, as some have noted, it appears as though he isn’t fully supported and doesn’t show up in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe cutscenes and the like. But either way, at least Blue Toad is back (or never went away).

As if that wasn’t enough good news, we also have some great deals running on Switch Joy-Con and Nintendo eShop Gift CardsZelda II for NES is coming to Switch Online this month and we finally got a release date for the upcoming Yoshi title.
