Deadbolt Stories January 21, 2016

Over the last 12-18 months, popular lock manufacturers like Schlage and Kwikset have introduced iOS and Android-connected deadbolts for your home. Results have been somewhat mixed but there has clearly been an interest amongst consumers for this type of technology. This week, Brinks announced a new competitor in this space that blends familiar features with some new ideas.

The Array Digital Deadbolt has all the typical app-connected qualities. But instead of using low-power connection options like ZigBee or Bluetooth, Brinks is relying on Wi-Fi to communicate between devices. Because of the increased power drain, a solar panel has been built-in to the lock to help keep things running. More details below.

Smart connected devices for our homes are becoming more commonplace, with technology giants like Apple and Samsung leading the way with support for a myriad of devices. Even Amazon has an internet-connected speaker that will control your lights, thermostat and more.

One of the biggest issues with this technology is price. Many consumers are not willing to pay the premium that comes with support for Apple’s HomeKit or other platforms like Z-Wave or Zigbee. Simply put, the deadbolt has worked in its existing state for decades, why upgrade it now?

Kwikset has been leading the charge on smartphone connected locks with its Kevo Bluetooth-enabled product. But for roughly $200, the adoption rate has been slow. Today, the lock maker has released a new deadbolt that drops a number of features but retains its internet connectivity in exchange for a lower price point.

Deadbolt Stories September 25, 2014

Over the years, the lock industry has not seen too many big moments of growth over the traditional deadbolt. While some locks are easier to change now and some even feature Bluetooth, nothing has really knocked the doors down from a design perspective. Haven is pulling out all the stops along the way, integrating in the future with Apple’s HomeKit, changing from old-school design, all while building a very tough lock. You won’t believe how strong this thing really is… expand full story
