Despite having our iPhone in our pockets and an Apple Watch on our wrists, my custom desk clock made with vintage Soviet Union-era Nixie tubes still gets a ton of attention. Anyone that sees it in person is immediately drawn to it, likely because there’s something about the vintage, steampunk-esque look that you’ll never get from the cold modern industrial design of your smartphone or smartwatch. It’s the coolest desk clock you can buy, but you can debate that in the comments if you dare. I get dozens of inquiries about the clock each week because it’s pictured in the photo of my desk used in our weekly Top Stories post on 9to5Mac. Here’s how to get one…

Update (2/28 12:30pm): @DavidFell is our winner, thank you for entering our giveaway!

For as much as we love our new technology, we tend to either carry them in the cheapest possible option or the most expensive one we can find. There are thousands of plastic and synthetic material items that are available to serve this exact purpose. But more often than not, they have a short life and end up in the trash. What if the focus shifted from the latest accessories to purchasing one item that could protect your tools, digital or not, for your entire life?

Etwas is answering that question while creating on-the-go solutions for your gear. In a technology driven world where it’s often about the latest, for this Brooklyn-based company it’s all about staying power. Utilizing techniques from centuries ago, these bags are made in an electricity-free work environment designed with heirloom quality in mind.

We’ve got the full story on Etwas as well as a giveaway worth $380, head below for more. expand full story

Update: (2/21 12:05pm): @jayrodesign is our winner – thank you to everyone that entered our contest.

As advances in machinery and technology continue to progress in there modern world, there have been many “deaths” along the way in how our goods are manufactured. Many of the big brands that strive to create identical products over and over again, losing the unique aspect that comes with human interaction during the manufacturing process. Every single stitch must be perfect or the shirt gets tossed. Each cut is exactly the same for every pair of jeans on the rack.

While the precise nature of our evolving technology world is nice, many of the goods that we encounter lack that personal feel. Cord Shoes of Atlanta, Georgia does just the opposite of that. Proprietor Sarah Green, is creating beautiful handmade boots and accessories with skills that she has learned on her own. It’s a story that involves hard work, late hours and a lucky batch of Hurricane Katrina flooded machinery.

Today, we are going to tell you about Cord Shoes.

This giant custom PlayStation controller table is ridiculously detailed

A woodworker from South Carolina has put a giant custom wood PlayStation controller table up on Etsy. Take a look at the images and you’ll see just how detailed it is. Every button is present with the correct coloring and it even has a built-in cabinet to store your games. You’d think that being priced at $3,000 it would take a long time to find a buyer, but you’d be wrong.

We spotted this controller earlier this morning and it has already sold. If you can’t live without it, then I’d suggest reaching out to the seller who is currently soliciting custom orders.

Pics of the building process via FaceBook.

Original listing:

My original design patterned after the Playstation 3 gaming controller. The entire piece is constructed from 3/4″ Birch plywood. It features a custom cut 1/2″ tempered glass top with polished edge. The fold down door, opens to a roomy storage area for games, controllers, etc… High quality vinyl decals applied on buttons. 3/4″ clear, Polycarbonate rod used to support front. This is my most complex piece to date. A heavy, solid piece of furniture est. 100 lbs. Finished in flat black with a matte clear final coating to seal and protect.

There are many different products that often cross our desk, the ones that we remember the most standout for more than just their function. The best often have a way of standing out visually, providing an experience that goes beyond its purpose. Transportation has continued to evolve over the last 120 years, we’ve come a long way from the model T to the Tesla D. But sometimes it’s the throwback style, a vintage offering that proves to standout amongst the competition.

Janus Motorcycles of Goshen, Indiana has managed to do just that. Creating a beautiful motorcycle that not only functions well, but it manages to do so with exceptional style. Over the last four years, Janus has developed into one of the burgeoning bike companies in the United States. What truly is a labor of love in a small shop in Northern Indiana, is now ready to be known across the world.

It’s time to meet Janus Motorcycles. expand full story

It all started with vintage shaving products for two friends, Sebastian Sanderius and Matthew Disarcik. Enamored with the design of these testosterone wielding devices, the pair began collecting them some time ago. Then, they started to refurbish and sell them online, a hobby that eventually turned into a full fledged business. The venture spurred so much success and interest that it created a foundation for another company.

Thus, Bison Made was born. A small company out of Phoenix, Arizona creating perfectly crafted accessories for men and their devices. From a fundamentally sound iPhone 6 wallet, to the strikingly precise Straight Razor, Bison Made has everything to make you re-think your whole accessory collection.

Let me show you Bison Made.
