Update (7/18 7:30pm): @jamesthomasbyrd is our winner, thanks for entering the contest!

We have highlighted many talented companies, groups and individuals in our Small States series as the artisan subset of American manufacturers has seen a rebirth over the last decade. Not only are there quality goods being handcrafted on a daily basis from Brooklyn to Portland, people are changing their lives around just to pursue a passion of creating beautiful products with their hands.

Erol Chandler is no exception to this movement. After a career that has included two Master’s Degrees, a stint as a middle school science teacher and truck driver, it was time to start a new adventure. At thirty years old and armed with a lifetime of interest in making things by hand, A-Lamp Design was born in Oregon. Now, Erol is taking to Kickstarter to share his skills and bring a little light to everyone’s home.  expand full story

As we continue to cover companies that manufacture in the United States, a recurring theme has come forward. Many of these brands do not have the resources of larger companies, while that may have some downfalls, it also pushes them to think outside of the box and do more with less.

A lot of the products that we feature in Small States have a simplistic design that achieve the same goal as much more complex offerings. Generally, these solutions are more complementary of the minimalistic design found in many household products.

One Los Angeles-based startup that we recently came across is a wonderful example of this. Feltmark manufactures beautifully simple lights that manage to look stylish without much in the way of extras. It truly is an example of the “more is less theory” and today we get to share these products and give a few away as well: expand full story

Update (3/14 9:15am): @schellack wins the Grovemade Dock. Thanks everyone for reading and entering this week’s giveaway.

When it comes to Apple accessories, there are typically two options: materials that are designed to mirror the product and those are meant to complement that product in a different way. The former is typically anodized aluminum, plastic or a metal of some kind, while the latter has been trending towards natural materials like wood or fabrics. Personally, I love seeing natural materials complement modern electronics. There are so many companies manufacturing here in the United States that are taking advantage of the natural resources and skills here.

I’ve been able to spend the last few weeks with Grovemade’s latest dock for the iPhone 6. We’ve covered company’s story before and this time around are able to see its newest home for Apple’s phone.

Head below for full details, our review and to learn how you can win a Grovemade iPhone 6 dock for yourself.

Update (2/28 12:30pm): @DavidFell is our winner, thank you for entering our giveaway!

For as much as we love our new technology, we tend to either carry them in the cheapest possible option or the most expensive one we can find. There are thousands of plastic and synthetic material items that are available to serve this exact purpose. But more often than not, they have a short life and end up in the trash. What if the focus shifted from the latest accessories to purchasing one item that could protect your tools, digital or not, for your entire life?

Etwas is answering that question while creating on-the-go solutions for your gear. In a technology driven world where it’s often about the latest, for this Brooklyn-based company it’s all about staying power. Utilizing techniques from centuries ago, these bags are made in an electricity-free work environment designed with heirloom quality in mind.

We’ve got the full story on Etwas as well as a giveaway worth $380, head below for more. expand full story

Update: (2/21 12:05pm): @jayrodesign is our winner – thank you to everyone that entered our contest.

As advances in machinery and technology continue to progress in there modern world, there have been many “deaths” along the way in how our goods are manufactured. Many of the big brands that strive to create identical products over and over again, losing the unique aspect that comes with human interaction during the manufacturing process. Every single stitch must be perfect or the shirt gets tossed. Each cut is exactly the same for every pair of jeans on the rack.

While the precise nature of our evolving technology world is nice, many of the goods that we encounter lack that personal feel. Cord Shoes of Atlanta, Georgia does just the opposite of that. Proprietor Sarah Green, is creating beautiful handmade boots and accessories with skills that she has learned on her own. It’s a story that involves hard work, late hours and a lucky batch of Hurricane Katrina flooded machinery.

Today, we are going to tell you about Cord Shoes.

Throughout Small States you’ll hear stories of people that are making a conscious effort to bring manufacturing back to the United States. Companies that strive to create products in a way that has escaped our country and fled overseas. We are finding that these manufacturers have a great pride in what they do — this week we’re taking a look at Woodchuck USA, a company who’s pride is evident across all aspects of its business.

“Nature back to people. Jobs back to America. Quality back to products.”

With its locally grown hardwood accessories, Woodchuck has managed to create beautiful additions for your Apple devices. All the while doing it with a focus on integrity and creating jobs here in the United States.

Update (1/24 9:00am): @ericmata75 is our winner, thank you to everyone for entering our giveaway!

The story goes, as told by co-founder Andrew Allen, that Paper by FiftyThree started out of a love for analog products. That four Microsoft colleagues turned friends with the resources of a Fortune 500 company found a greater passion in a pencil, scissors…and paper. Often Andew, Georg Petschnigg, Jonathan Harris and Julian Walker would sit down and discuss their ideas, talking about possibilities that bounced around in their heads. These brainstorming sessions would always be recorded on a scrap, or coffee filter, napkin or Moleskin, notably they weren’t writing in Word or the like – they were writing everything out.

The feeling of analog products, the feel of cutting paper or dragging a pencil across paper. How do they bring that feeling to a digital world? It was at that point, they bunkered down in a 5th floor New York apartment and set out to re-imagine digital design. They set out to make Paper. expand full story

It all started with vintage shaving products for two friends, Sebastian Sanderius and Matthew Disarcik. Enamored with the design of these testosterone wielding devices, the pair began collecting them some time ago. Then, they started to refurbish and sell them online, a hobby that eventually turned into a full fledged business. The venture spurred so much success and interest that it created a foundation for another company.

Thus, Bison Made was born. A small company out of Phoenix, Arizona creating perfectly crafted accessories for men and their devices. From a fundamentally sound iPhone 6 wallet, to the strikingly precise Straight Razor, Bison Made has everything to make you re-think your whole accessory collection.

Let me show you Bison Made.
