WD HARD DRIVES Western Digital is expanding its popular RED line of Network Attached Storage hard drives to include two 2.5 inch versions. The current lineup of RED drives is limited to four 3.5 inch drives ranging from 1TB to 4TB. The move to a 2.5 inch form factor will give owners of smaller NAS systems a better performing option over traditional 2.5 inch drives. There are not many of these small form factor NAS systems on the market, but Synology (our favorite) offers the DS411slim, which supports up to four 2.5″ drives. These are perfect for tucking away in a small server room or network closet.

Like their bigger brother, the 2.5 inch WD RED drives will feature NASware 2.0 technology, which ensures maximum compatibility and performance with all major NAS devices. These drives run cool and are optimized to run in a 24×7 environment without fail. For even more peace of mind, each WD RED drive includes a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty and access to a 24 hour support line.

The new 2.5 inch WD RED drives are available in two capacities: 1TB ($99), 750GB ($79). These drives were just announced this morning so they are still making their way to retailers but Amazon has the listings available for preorder or you can go directly through the online WD Store.

Update: Amazon has price-matched Newegg and is now charging just $270 for the Synology DiskStation DS213, which is a better deal for some due to Amazon Prime benefits and potential tax savings.

As one of their daily Shell Shocker deals, Newegg (And Amazon!) are offering the Synology DiskStation DS213 2-bay NAS Server for $270 with free shipping. That is a total savings of $60 off the retail price, $30 below the street price, and the lowest we have ever seen. Perfect for home and small office use, the Synology DS213 features iOS integration, AirPlay support, VPN server, ERP software, mail server, web server, anti-virus, and network video surveillance built-in. iTunes support allows users to stream stored content to their favorite iDevice wherever they have internet access via iOS apps.

9to5mac reviewed the Synology systems and found:

And, while it is a reliable backup and file server, Synology has very impressive apps for iOS and Android (as well as a nice web app) that allow you to take all of your music, movies, pictures, and media with you wherever you go so long as there is an internet connection. In fact, it goes well beyond normal NAS functionality…

This Synology unit does not come with hard drives. Here’s a list of compatible drives. We recommend Western Digital NAS optimized Intellipower Red drives. IntelliPower is key to a happy NAS system: “a fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance.” Other features of the Red drives include NASware for seamless integration and error recovery controls and 3D Active Balance Plus which minimizes vibration and noise. If you’re OK with rebates, Tiger Direct has the 2TB Red drive at its lowest price ever of $80.
