OS X Yosemite Stories November 12, 2015

Apple has now handpicked Readdle’s PDF Expert 5 for iPhone and iPad as the new App Store Free App of the Week. Regularly $10, we have seen it dip down to $5 a few times, but this is the very first time the popular app has gone free on the App Store since its release in early 2014. It has a 4.5 star rating from 7,658 reviewers. Compatible with OS X Yosemite and El Capitan, Readdle also launched PDF Expert for Mac just this morning.

expiredPixelmator image editing and effects app for Mac now 50% off: $15 (Reg. $30)

Pixelmator for Mac is now 50% off on the Mac App Store. Regularly listed at $29.99, the image editing and manipulation app is now available for $14.99. This is not only matching the best price we’ve seen on the app, but the first discount we’ve seen since the major OS X Yosemite overhaul. Along with its usual suite of enhancement tools and image effects, Pixelmator recently got a UI refresh inspired by Yosemite as well as “new features and technology” to support the new Mac OS.

Another feature added was something called Handoff Support, which allows users to “instantly switch” between Pixelmator on Mac and iPad. The recently released iPad version of the app is still available for $4.99 (Reg. $10) for another week.

In today’s best game/app deals, Jump Desktop (Remote Desktop) for Mac has dropped down to $14.99 (Reg. $30) this weekend in celebration of the release of OS X Yosemite. Not only does this match the best price we’ve seen on the Mac App Store, but developer Phase Five Systems just added full “support for OS X Yosemite including a new Yosemite inspired UI theme for Jump Desktop. Simpler and clearer UI.” Here is a list of some other Yosemite friendly apps on the Mac App Store.

expiredParallels Desktop 10 for Mac $60 shipped (Reg. $80)

MacMall is offering Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac for $59.95 shipped (matched at B&H). That’s $20 or 25% under the list price and the lowest price we can find for this recently released software. Keep in mind, those who already own Parallels Desktop 8 or 9 are eligible to upgrade to the newest version for only $50, so this deal is only for new customers.

Parallels is widely considered to be one of the best ways to run Windows on the Mac. Not only can you run thousands of Windows apps not normally available to Mac users but also launch them right from the dock in many cases. Users can also access bookmarks and files from across both systems. This popular virtual machine software can handle other operating systems as well and the folks at Parallels are hard at work preparing for OS X Yosemite. For a more detailed breakdown of what’s new in version 10, head over to our full review of Parallels Desktop 10.

Early reviews for the latest version have been positive and version 9 has received a 4.6/5 star rating from over 1,000 Amazon customers. It is Amazon’s #1 Best Selling Cross Platform Utilities.
