Disney Movies Anywhere is a digital movie locker that lets you stream and download previously purchased Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars titles. This service already worked with iTunes, Google Play, and VUDU, but earlier this week Disney added compatibility for Amazon Video and Microsoft Movies & TV.

Disney is celebrating this news by offering free copies of Monsters Inc, which is one of the best Pixar animated films ever released. It would cost you $20 to buy it on DVD or at least $15 to download a digital copy of it.

To get Monsters Inc. for free you’ll need to connect your Disney Movies Anywhere account to “any provider from which you have not previously been linked.” More details on the redemption process and promo are as follows:

Stream Pixar’s animated short Lava in its entirety for free

Until today the only way to see Pixar’s Lava short film was to catch it before a showing of Inside Out. But now Disney and Pixar are letting you stream the entire film for free from the Disney Movies Anywhere app.

To watch it you’ll need to sign-in to the app (or create a free account) and then head to the ‘Featured’ tab where you’ll see a big banner for Lava. Just tap the ‘Watch Video’ button and you’ll be off and running. Enjoy the film and good luck getting its song out of your head :D.

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, LAVA is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.

From Pixar Animation Studios, director James Ford Murphy and producer Andrea Warren, LAVA opens in theaters on June 19, 2015, in front of Inside Out.

Pixar tech director is building his own desktop robot companion with emotional intelligence

Technical director at Pixar, Alonso Martinez, is currently in the early stages of developing a new companion robot. Mira, as it is currently named, is apparently an exploration into human-robot interaction and emotional intelligence. While currently in the very early stages of development, the small desktop companion is already equipped with some pretty impressive facial recognition and quite an adorable little personality.

As you can see in the video above, Mira’s favorite activity at the moment is peak-a-boo. Able to realize when you have covered your face, it will light up in excitement like a small child once revealed again making happy blips and bleeps while changing color.

At this point there is no official timeline of when Mira might see the light of day. It sounds as though this peak-a-boo stuff might just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to functionality with plans to heighten its emotional awareness to create much deeper interactions with humans.

As her understanding of the world and people’s emotions get richer so will her ability to interact with people in a more meaningful way.”

You can see some very early prototype footage of Martinez tweaking Mira’s movement on his YouTube channel. While there are certainly many different fun little robot products out there, not many of them have facial recognition and can show this kind of emotion.

Pixar changed the film industry forever when it released Toy Story back in 1995. And ever since then John Lasseter and crew have been releasing full-length animated films that push the limits of technology and storytelling. The incredible titles that Pixar has produced in such a short period of time is staggering: Toy Story, Up, Cars, Brave, and Monsters Inc. Just to name some of my favorites.

This Friday Pixar is releasing its next film called Inside Out. To mark this occasion iTunes is currently featuring a Pixar promotion that discounts every full-length Pixar movie as well as some apps and other goodies. Pixar/Disney movies rarely go on sale, especially on iTunes. If you’ve been meaning to fill out your movie collection now’s the time to do it. Each movie usually sells for $19.99:

Individual rentals are discounted as well. The Pixar Story is also on sale at iTunes for $14.99 and Google Play for $12.99, which I would highly recommend if you’re interested in learning more about Pixar Animation Studios. You should be able to sync any of these movies with Disney Movies Anywhere to watch them on nearly any device. expand full story

Ratchet & Clank is coming to PS4 with impressive next gen visuals and a brand new arsenal

With the biggest event on the gaming calendar about to kick-off on Sunday, more and more exciting game announcements are starting to drop. Today we get the reveal of a new Ratchet & Clank game coming to PS4, and it looks gorgeous.

While you’re likely already thinking, here’s another HD remake, and to some degree it is, but it looks like Insomniac is going the extra distance to make it much more than that. Already known for its amazing visuals, reminiscent of Disney or Pixar films, Ratchet has never looked as good as he does on Sony’s next gen console.

While very much based on the original PlayStation 2 classic and tied to the upcoming CG film release, Insomniac is adding in modern controls, several new planets to explore, both updated (and new) action sequences and more. You can expect more boss fights, additional gameplay with Clank, and a brand new arsenal along with some old favorites:

That means both new weapons and fan-favorite tools of destruction from the Ratchet & Clank Future series will fill out Ratchet’s kit. From the brand new Pixelizer (which transforms enemies into explosive 8-bit pixels) to franchise favorites like the dance-party-inducing Groovitron

Unfortunately, Ratchet & Clank fans will have to wait until the Spring of next year to get their hands on it, but the pre-order is already up on Amazon with the bonus “Bouncer” weapon from Going Commando for $39.99 shipped.

You can see some direct feed gameplay action below and expect more at E3 2015 next week:

For all of the best game discounts and sales every day of the week, head over to our complete deal roundups.

Play the game, based on the movie, based on the game! Ratchet & Clank (PS4) is a new game based on elements from the original Ratchet & Clank (PS2). Developed alongside the major motion CG-animated picture coming to theatres in 2016, Ratchet & Clank (PS4) marks the PlayStation 4 debut of PlayStation’s greatest heroes. Join Ratchet, Clank, Captain Qwark and new friends as they battle to save the Solana Galaxy from the evil Chairman Drek.

Pixar Stories March 24, 2015

Pixar has created some of the most beloved films of all-time, including Toy Story, WALL-E, Monsters Inc, and Finding Nemo. Part of the reason for its success is the unbelievable visual effects the company has produced to enhance each film. These amazing visual effects were achieved with Pixar’s in-house rendering software called RenderMan.

And now, for the first time ever, RenderMan is available as a free download for non-commercial use… expand full story
