Samsung 850 PRO Series Stories July 1, 2014

Update (7/8 noon): Official retail prices are as follows: 128GB $129.99, 256GB $199.99, 512GB $399.99, and 1TB $699.99.

Update (7/2 9:30am): Now available for pre-order from Amazon with an estimated ship date of 7/21.

Samsung has officially announced its newest high-end Solid State Drive lineup. The 850 PRO Series features Samsung’s proprietary V-NAND technology, which Samsung believes is “the biggest technology shift in 30 years of the memory industry.”

Samsung supports this claim by explaining that V-NAND allows it to overcome “the density limit currently facing planar NAND architecture used in conventional flash memory, yielding significant speed, endurance and energy efficiency improvements.”

Here’s a video that should help clarify exactly what this technology does…

It features “read performance reaches up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s), with write performance of up to 520MB/s. Random read performance is up to 100,000 input/output operations-per-second (IOPS), with write speeds of up to 90,000 IOPS.”

The new 850 PRO is scheduled to ship later this month and is available in the following capacities: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. While the stated MSRPS range from $169.99 to $799.99, Newegg is currently offering up to 24% off with prices starting at just $129.99 shipped.

If you don’t need this much power then we highly recommend checking out the 840 EVO Series SSDs that currently start at $79.49 and have scored a near-perfect rating from Amazon reviewers. It’s also worth checking out the 840 PRO series drives for discounted previous generation pricing.
