Nintendo announces official price drop coming for its 2DS handheld console

Nintendo has announced an official price drop coming to its already affordable 2DS handheld system. It currently holds a suggested retail price of $129.99, but come August 30th, the portable system will drop to $99.99 shipped. The 2DS, which plays almost the entire 3DS (and DS) library of games, will still ship with Mario Kart 7 when the new price drop hits at the end of the month.

We have seen the 2DS dip down to $100 and even lower a few times in the last year or so, plus a few sweet refurbished deals for even less. In fact, GameStop has it for under $100 in-store right now at some locations. However, with the official price drop we are likely to see prices come down even further from major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, GameStop and more, so it might be a smart idea to hold-off on purchasing until that happens.

For today’s best gaming deals head over to our daily roundups.

Amazon has quietly given its Prime members another valuable benefit: discounts on recently released and upcoming video games. Just yesterday we shared a couple of these deals in our daily apps/games roundup. At the time we thought they were just a couple of one-offs. But now we’ve come to learn that these types of deals may be here to stay.amazon-prime-video-game-dealThese discounts cover select video game consoles, accessories, and games that are sold by Amazon direct. There isn’t an easy way to view all the current offers. The only way to identify a video game item as having special Prime pricing is to look for the “Amazon Prime member Savings” blurb (shown above) on each item’s listing.

star-wars-battlefront

Even Prime members on a free trial or discounted Student membership qualify for the special pricing. However, you won’t know the exact discount amount until you reach the final page of checkout. That means the advertised price never changes even if the item is eligible for Prime savings. So you’ll need to add the item to your cart and proceed to checkout to see exactly how much the discount is. Here are the best current video game deals for Prime members we’ve found so far:

UPDATED! Ever since Nintendo released the hit game Super Smash. Bros for the Wii U, demand for Nintendo’s classic GameCube controllers (and adapters to use them) has surged. Nintendo’s official GameCube to Wii U controller adapter remains hard to find and subject to price-gouging at $70-$100 through resellers, so third-party options have popped up at more reasonable prices. Since our readers and editors alike are Smash Bros. fans, we wanted to quickly point out some of the most popular GameCube adapters and controllers that are currently available, and much more affordable at $25-$30…

Update February 17, 2015: Gamestop is currently offering a $50 bundle of a Wii U GameCube Adapter and one GameCube controller, to ship May 1. If you’re holding out for the official Adapter, this is the easiest way to guarantee you’ll get one.

Nintendo’s Wii U will likely be remembered as the most misunderstood major game console ever released. As the sequel to Wii – which sold over 100 million consoles – the Wii U is a true 1080p HD console, plays all of the Wii’s games, and even includes a screen on its packed-in controller. It’s also the best current-generation console for couples and families, hands-down. But it had a slow start due to weak early software support, only getting mega-hit games in mid-2014, and many people didn’t realize that it was actually an all-new console.

Super Smash Bros Stories December 14, 2014

Update 2-12-14 12:00PM: We’ve updated the Amiibo list to flag the seven Wave 3B Amiibos that are hitting stores on February 13. Also, we added Wave 4 (Super Mario Bros.) series Amiibos arriving March 20, 2015, along with the Wave 5 Super Smash Bros. characters coming in Spring 2015!

Nintendo’s interactive Amiibo figurines have rapidly become the surprise hit toys of the 2014 holiday season. Cool on their own, they can also use NFC wireless to interact with select Wii U (and future Nintendo 3DS) games, storing their own experience points, leveling up over time, and unlocking in-game bonuses. Unusual defects in some of the original “Wave 1” figures – notably including a super-rare two-cannoned Samus – are leading to crazy high eBay prices for certain characters, and prices are starting to go up for Wave 2 and Wave 3 Amiibos. Six of the Wave 3 figures are just hitting stores now, and Wave 4 preorders have opened for mid-March debuts of new Super Mario Bros. series characters.

Super Smash Bros Stories September 11, 2014

Nintendo just recently introduced us to the new 3DS handhelds which come with a host of new additions like a second analog stick, new shoulder buttons and replaceable face plates. And now the company has unveiled a series of new themed 3DS consoles including two Super Smash Bros. variations (red and blue), a blue Persona Q version and one that is sure to strike a nostalgic chord in many of us:

The new NES Edition Nintendo 3DS XL handheld boasts a nostalgic look to anyone familiar with the roots of Nintendo’s home gaming consoles. The hardware itself is designed to look like an old school NES controller on the exterior with matching D-pad and face buttons inside. Nintendo has also created a special edition box for the classic 3DS in the style of the original NES console, look-alike RCA inputs and all.

The GameStop exclusive NES Edition Nintendo 3DS XL will release Oct. 10 at a suggested retail price of $199.99, and is already availble for pre order at GameStop.

The red and blue Smash Bros. version, which is adorned by a number of the upcoming game’s characters, will launch Sept. 19th nationwide in preparation for the October 3rd launch date of Super Smash Bros. The Persona Q edition will come available around November 25th in honor of the launch of Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. Both models are currently available for pre-order at Best Buy and hold a suggested retail price of $199.99.

These tech essentials will not only help you survive college life, but maybe even help you land a spot on the Dean’s list (no promises). Even though the majority of our top picks are geared towards college students living in a dorm, we think they can help students of all ages.

All of the recommendations below have been shaped by my experiences while attending a four-year private University.

Entertainment

The fall is not only back to school season, but also home to the baseball playoffs and the start of the football season. MLB.TV is expensive and NFL Sunday Ticket is a hassle. We recommend a Sling Media Slingbox to keep tabs on your favorite sports teams while away from home. The all-new SlingBox M1 was just released and is the most affordable Slingbox ever at just $149.99.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 may be the flashy options for dorm room gaming, but we recommend saving a few bucks and opting for an Xbox 360 or Wii U. The Xbox 360 has a huge back super-smash-bros-wii-ucatalog of awesome games that are now priced to move. Plus, some next-gen games (like Mortal Kombat X), will also be available on 360 and PS3. The Wii U has had a rough run, but party games like Mario Kart 8 and the upcoming Super Smash Brothers make it an excellent choice for dorm room hang sessions.

Skip Blu-ray and DVD. The players will take up prime TV stand real-estate and it’s a hassle to find the movie you’re looking for and then physically pop it in a player (I know, first world problems). Instead, go with a Roku 3/streaming stick or Apple TV to stream your media from Netflix (free trial), Hulu Plus (free trial), and iTunes.

It’s perfectly OK that listening to Norah Jones Spotify radio (student discount) helps you study, but don’t be that guy and play it out loud. A nice pair of headphones are key for school. If your budget allows it, then definitely upgrade to a set of noise-cancelling cans, like the Bose QC15, to drown out any background noise. Bust out a larger portable Bluetooth speaker like the Logitech UE BOOM (review) or Jawbone’s Big JAMBOX (review) when it’s time to party.
