It’s no secret that we are big fans of Synology NAS boxes. In fact, Jordan even wrote a piece about how he believes every Mac and iOS user should have a DiskStation. But at the end of the day its performance and reliability hinges on the drives it’s running. That’s why we recommend using Western Digital’s NAS-optimized Red hard drives. They’re more costly than your average desktop hard drive, but they’re also built to meet the demands of a 24/7 server.

Right now, Adorama (authorized dealer) via eBay Daily Deals has the 4TB Western Digital Red drives for $149 each with free shipping. Outside of a brief sale a couple months ago, this is the best price we have ever seen for the 4TB model. It carriers a list price of $200 and is currently available for $173 on Amazon. If you still haven’t picked up a Synology box yet, then we recommend the 2-bay DS213j that is on sale for $187.99 shipped.
