AT&T announces iPhone 6 trade-in promo, includes $200 minimum for iPhone 4/4s

Update (9/13 10:00am): Details concerning this promo can now be found here.

AT&T has announced its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus trade-in offer and it’s one of the best we’ve seen from any carrier.

Starting on Friday, September 12th, AT&T will be offering a minimum trade credit of $300 for iPhone 5s and a minimum of $200 for iPhone 4/4s and iPhone 5/5c. That means anyone with a working iPhone 4 or newer can (at minimum) trade up to a new iPhone 6 for free. Unlike other carriers and trade-in services, AT&T does not restrict how its customers can use the trade credit.

Furthermore, you can also get a $100 bill credit “with the purchase of any iPhone when activating a new line of service with a smartphone on AT&T Next.”

Just like other carriers and Apple itself, AT&T will begin accepting iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus preorders starting tomorrow at 12:01 AM PST (3:01 AM EST). Head to your local AT&T store for more information on any of the aforementioned trade-in deals.

Not on AT&T? Here’s Verizon’s trade-in details. Also, Walmart is taking $20 (or more) off the new iPhones, while Radio Shack will be giving away free $50 iTunes gift cards.

Full AT&T iPhone 6 pricing matrix and Next information follows…

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available for $0 down on AT&T Next, and Next also has no activation, upgrade or financing fees. With Next 12, you’re eligible for a $0 upgrade after 12 months…with Next 18 the same is true after 18 months. If you choose to trade in and upgrade your smartphone after 12 or 18 installments, no further installments will be billed for your original phone. Start over with a new plan. Or, keep your current smartphone, and after 20 or 24 monthly payments, your smartphone is paid for in full.

Is it just me or has this link not worked for days?

Is this something that can be done in store or is it like the regular one where you have to mail it?

Does this promotion apply if you want to trade in your device but buy an iPhone 6 at full retail price?

I spoke with two AT&T reps at two different stores. Mine was unaware of the promo. The other said it’s “up to” $100 for the 4 or 4S and “up to” $200 for the 5. This is depending on the condition of the phone. It’s not a minimum. Also, the $ is an AT&T credit you can use on your bill, accessories, etc…
AT&T is a pretty inept company. I’m not rolling the dice on letting them handle my preorder. I’ll stick with Apple and just look to craigslist to sell the old phones.

do you have to give the phone and wait for iPhone 6?
What if you order via Apple…can you still trade it in? I am staying with ATT but had trouble last time i wanted a new iPhone finding a store that had them in stock.

You can first order the phone and after it arrives you can go to ATT store and trade your old phone. And about ordering it from apple, i spoke to the customer care guys at ATT and they said that yes you can order via apple and still trade in your old phone. ((But it will be better if you confirm from a much reliable source.))

Any mention of what condition the phone must be in? I have a working 8gb iphone 4 which has a cracked screen. I’d love to get $200 for it 🙂

I just went to my local store and they are not aware of this deal. The rep even checked with the store manager who stated the same thing. My 4 is only worth $50. How can we verify?

The promo doesn’t start until tomorrow. It’s possible the news hasn’t rolled out to all AT&T locations. We received this information directly from AT&T PR.

The two big carriers are getting desperate to keep their customers. I’ve had AT&T long enough, when I get my iPhone 6 4.7 I will be switching to T-Mobile and keep my iPhone 5…$200 for it, when I’ve now paid $650+ through subsidizing, just doesn’t sound good to me. I will keep it and use it as an iPod touch…mostly for music and second camera.

is BestBuy matching AT&T and Verizon (and T-mobile because they are matching) giving $200 for any iphone4 or greater towards a iphone6 or better?

Where is the trade in details? – I’d like to use the gift card towards my cell phone bill as I need to upgrade at Best Buy to take advantage of the $50 coupon that i signed up for in February.

This information was shared with us directly from an AT&T PR rep. You can reach out to your local store for more info.

Keep in mind: Best Buy’s $50 coupon only applies to phones purchased at full-price or at 2-yr upgrade pricing. It does not apply to phones purchased on an installment plan like AT&T Next or Verizon Edge. I verified this with a BB CSR over the phone a few minutes ago.

“That means anyone with a working iPhone 4 or newer can (at minimum) trade up to a new iPhone 6 for free.” And by anyone, it means anyone who is not on a contract…correct?

    • Dan DeSilva - 11 years ago

Correct, if he/she is eligible for a full upgrade

  12. Vimana Boy (@vimanaboy) - 11 years ago

Any idea if they will accept multiple trade-ins?

I plan to sell my iPhones (both 5s with cases, accessories and all in MINT condition in a Buy It Now on eBay. I always do this when I upgrade. Do a Buy It Now set price – fair price – and offer free shipping. My iPhones always sell in just “seconds” after I post them with a couple pics of everything. Less hassle and I get the price I know they are WORTH since mine are in MINT condition.
