Spotify has announced today that it is adding even more value to its already fantastic student plan that includes the music streaming service and Hulu for just $5/month. For US students who sign up this fall, they’ll be getting Showtime thrown in as well.
Just about a year ago, Spotify announced the partnership with Hulu to include its video streaming service with the affordable Spotify Premium student plan. Now, as noted by The Verge, Spotify is upping the ante again as it adds Showtime to the $5 plan.
Spotify’s chief premium business officer, Alex Norström, shared more.
“[The partnership] has been an overwhelming success for us, and for Hulu as well,” Norström tells The Verge. “We’re always trying to find creative solutions to add value back to our premium customers, especially via partnerships, and our focus is on the long-term relationship with each subscriber. If we do the right thing, they reward us with loyalty.”
This will be another compelling reason for students to make the switch from another competing service like Apple Music. Of course, the deal is good for Showtime too, who is hoping to gain young customers out of the partnership.
“We had to figure out ways to get into a place where kids could stream us easily,” Showtime COO Tom Christie tells The Verge. “There’s no other brand out there today that’s been more successful in setting up streaming business on campus than Spotify”
Showtime is also open to the idea of bundling its streaming service along with the standard $13/month Spotify Premium plan, but no word on when that might happen yet.
The fine print says that students need to sign up by October 9 to cash in on the deal. The first three months are $1, with the standard $5/month pricing kicking in afterwards.
