Tested: Mid-century meets modern with the Flexispot Fusion Retro Standing Desk

I’m back with another Flexispot review, but this time it’s a standing desk I’ve had my eye on for quite some time. I assembled and tested Flexispot’s Fusion Retro Standing Desk and shared the details and thoughts on the entire process below.

9to5Toys’ take

Upon first unboxing this large standing desk, I could tell Flexispot had carefully packaged it. During transit, a large gash was cut into the side of the box, so I was worried I’d find a damaged desk inside, but that wasn’t the case. The layers of styrofoam took the full impact and kept everything safe.

Once everything was unboxed, the quality was immediately apparent in a way I’m not normally used to – in the smell. I would smell the real wood and stain. This isn’t just sawdust glued together. The desk is solid, sturdy, and a beautiful color.

All the components were easily identifiable, and the instructions were mostly clear. I reported some confusion during a previous build of another Flexispot standing desk, but the Fusion Retro went together quite easily.

One mistake I made was assembling the desk in my basement before trying to move it into my office. Even with the door off, it was too wide, so I had to remove the legs to get it through. So I think it would be best to assemble this one in the room you intend to use it in because it’s quite large!

One last note about assembly – Flexispot provided the exact amount of hardware, so be sure to keep track of everything. If you drop a screw and can’t find it, there aren’t any spares!

Once I got the Flexispot Fusion Retro desk into my office, I immediately fell in love with its look, style, and how it complemented my home office. The walnut color looks beautiful in both natural and artificial light, and I found I wanted to keep it down when not using it because it looks so nice as a sitting desk (although I admittedly work from a standing position 99% of the time).

My previous Flexispot standing desk had a USB-A port on the front, which I found convenient, but I always wished for a USB-C port because tech is slowly shifting in that direction, and I got it with the Retro Fusion. Not just USB-C, but also a USB-A, next to a digital display and four memory buttons for preferred heights.

Another bonus was additional USB ports on the back of the desk (see image below) alongside three 110V outlets. It is so much easier to plug my laptop and monitor into the Flexispot Fusion Retro Desk than fight for plugs on my wall.

Lastly, Flexispot provided a small rubber cord management holder that can be stuck to the desktop to help keep those cords plugged in the back from getting tangled (see image below).

With dual motors, the Flexispot Fusion Retro is the smoothest and quietest standing desk I’ve encountered. Regardless of height, I was able to easily access the front drawer, which houses my wireless keyboard and shuts quietly without slamming.

The two storage drawers on either side of the desk feature a black suede-like texture that helps protect more fragile items. These aren’t on any tracks or anything either, so if you don’t like them, they’re easily removed for the all-wood look.

My last desk was also one solid desktop, so I wasn’t sure what I’d think of the rear shelf on the Fusion Retro. Not only did it add a layer of depth and character to the desk in my office, but it also became the perfect spot for my monitor, keeping my head up and my posture better while working.

Overall, the Fusion Retro Standing Desk from Flexispot is as functional as it is stylish. It’s sturdy, spacious, and modular, with quality evident throughout. This desk doesn’t just make working from home easier; it is a genuine addition to my office’s aesthetic, and I highly recommend it.
