While many of us are focused on last-minute gifts and some well-deserved time off over the holidays, most tech company’s are doing nothing of the sort. With CES 2018 just around the corner now, we are already starting to see new gear from some major players. One of the first out of the gate this year is Samsung with its new sound bar.
While we are certainly expecting to hear a lot more from Samsung at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the impressively slim design and built-in technologies the new NW700 Sound+ sports has us intrigued.
Sound bars are one of those pieces of technology where it is hard to innovate. Samsung might not be re-writing the book with its latest offering, but it does have some interesting features.
Set to succeed the “award-winning” MS650 Sound+ model in Samsung’s lineup, it is also 41% narrower. Designed to be mounted on the wall beneath your display, the new NW700 Sound+ sound bar is only 53.5mm in width. In other words, it only comes off the wall by about 2.1-inches or so.
Developed at Samsung’s Audio Lab in Valencia, California, the new sound bar features distortion-cancelling, “wide-range tweeters” and multi-speaker control. There’s actually a subwoofer built-in to its slender housing offering up a nice 3-channel setup as well.
The technology found in the NW700 Sound+ and its previous iterations has been routinely praised for helping the soundbars achieve powerful bass, cohesive soundstage and impressive clarity. The distortion-cancelling technology has also been recognized for effectively syncing the drivers in the soundbar to produce a clear and powerful sound. The technology works by predicting distortion at the end of the speaker movement and making the necessary adjustments before the distortion actually takes place. This results in smooth, distortion-free bass tones.
There are also some of those listening modes that rarely ever seem to do what they claim (as far as I can tell). Those include Standard Mode, Surround Mode, and something known as Smart Mode that appears to just make all the best choices for you in terms of volume and “surround sound effects”.
All-in-all, we’ll have to wait to hear this thing on the show floor come early January at CES 2018, but the overall design looks like it’s headed in the right direction. It would have been nice to see at least a black colorway available, but for now it looks like Samsung silver will be our only choice.
