Mechanical keyboards are amazing. Seriously, there is no better typing experience than using a fully mechanical keyboard. I’ve been using mechanical keyboards for years, starting with a Logitech G710 a few years ago.
Fast forward to now and I use a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar when mobile and a Das Keyboards Professional 4 when at my desk. Though I do like the keyboard on my MacBook Pro (while many others don’t), I still prefer a good mechanical keyboard.
Some companies have tried to put full mechanical keyboards in their laptops, but it has always been full-sized CHERRY or similar switches. Thankfully, CHERRY has finally announced a switch that should work great for gaming and professional laptops alike.
The CHERRY MX Low Profile RGB is the first truly new development in mechanical switches in more than 30 years. The company’s R&D department has invested a lot of time and effort in achieving a total height of only 11.9 millimeters without compromising on characteristics and quality. These new CHERRY MX Low Profile switches support either full RGB colors or single color depending on the manufacturer of the keyboard or computer. I’m super stoked for this as that means you should be able to have an individually RGB lit fully mechanical keyboard on your laptop in the not-too-distant future. This is something I’ve been waiting for since I got into PC gaming.
Bringing CHERRY switches to laptops like this has both benefits and drawbacks. There is now a way to have a fantastic typing experience when mobile, which I’ve long been waiting for. But, it also means that there are going to be an influx of super loud and obnoxious typing in places where gamers and professionals alike have these keyboards.
CHERRY is first releasing its MX Low Profile switches with the the Red variant. CHERRY says that this is very similar to its current Red switch on the desktop line of keyboards. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Red switches personally, as I prefer Blue and Brown switches. CHERRY did say that the MX Low Profile switches will be coming in other variants in the future.
