Dell is known for owning Alienware, the gaming computer company. Alienware computers are great and powerful, though sometimes a little too flashy and expensive. Some people don’t want to drop thousands of dollars on a gaming computer, or maybe they don’t want something that looks like it just came off of a spaceship.
That’s where Dell’s new G line of laptops comes in. With the G3, G5, and G7 computers, Dell is delivering mid- to high-end performance at prices that won’t completely break the bank. With starting prices of around $750, this new series of computers should be great for someone who just wants higher-end performance without the higher-end price.
Obviously, when building high-end computers from expensive components, things can get costly. One area that Dell “cut back” here is the actual build of the computer. Instead of going with parts like magnesium, high-end screens, and all of the RGB anyone could want, Dell went a little lower-end here.
With a mostly-plastic build, a trackpad that’s not fantastic, and a keyboard that’s standard, these computers won’t make you write home about how fantastic the build is. But, they’re budget computers and that should come with the territory.
When I think of a gaming computer, I never think of using it with the built-in peripherals anyway. If I’m going to be gaming, I want to use an external keyboard and mouse 9 out of 10 times as this will always result in a better experience.
The Dell G3 will start at 15-inches and is powered by an NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics card. You can upgrade to Intel’s latest-generation i7 and spec it out with SSDs, should you prefer. The G3 15 (also available in a 17-inch model) is Dell’s “thinnest gaming laptop to date” and comes in black, recon blue, and alpine white.
Stepping up to the G5 or G7, you can get up to a GTX 1060 and Intel’s latest i9 in the G7. This means you can get crazy performance without really breaking the bank. The G7 is Dell’s highest-end G-series computer and features possible upgrades such as a 4K screen, dual drives, and up to 2×2 Killer networking.
